I found it!
I knew it was there somewhere!
At the beginning of High Deryni, Morgan and Duncan heal the rebel soldier,
and they are described as being "one fair, the other darker", from the
rebel's point of view.

Following on, I've just been reading The Tough Guide to Fantasyland by
Diana Wynne Jones. There's a bit about recognising what the characters
are like by colour coding, black being Evil, of course.
However, "grey eyes mean POWER or healing abilities and will be
reassuring...." and fair hair is always Good, especially if it's
silver-blonde.
Does this remind anyone of anyone?
(Doesn't work for the Haldanes, though)

Did you ever see the article "Blonde-haired heroes, Brown-haired losers"
by Hannah M.G. Shapero? She wrote it a number of years ago, only
partially tongue in cheek. In fact, it was so many years ago that now
I'm not sure that;s the exact title. It's something like that. Or maybe
it was "Brown-eyed losers; grey-eyed heroes."

As a dark haired person, I say "hrumpf" to "fair hair is always Good."

Just my opinion of course... Wink

Me, too, Marion. Hannah was commenting on the sheer silliness of the
proliferation of fantasy heroes/heroines with unusual hair or eye color.

We brown-haired/brown-eyed people can console ourselves by remembering
that Dom Queron, that legend in his own lifetime, was brown-haired and
brown-eyed. Smile

There you go - we're in good company! (Queron is pretty high on my "what
happened to him" list. I wonder if we'll find out in the book about
948...He's an intriguing character.)

We-elll...... Kelson does spend three years mooning over a brown-eyed black
haired woman with an olive complexion. =o) Duchess Meraude also has brown
eyes, as I recall. However, they need company. And they need some good guys
who DON'T look as if they're medieval Ralph Lauren models. <G>

The Tough Guide to Fantasyland actually doesn't work very well for the
Deryni novels, mainly because it's poking fun at all the cliches of the
genre - which is why I thought the grey-eyed, blonde haired, healing
ability bit was amusing.
It just goes to show that KK is one of the superior fantasy writers who
doesn't indulge in cheap cliche.

Perhaps even more relevantly, when KK was writing the early Deryni novels,
genre fantasy didn't yet exist. When one spots apparent genre clichés in KK's
work (and some certainly occur), chances are that she should be demanding
patent licensing payments from today's fantasy writers.

I thought Dom Queron's hair was auburn when he was younger and was silvered
by the last time we've seen him so far (TBP).

Including myself in the brown-eyed brunette category,

Perhaps, but weren't his eyes brown?

Auburn's just a fancy name for brown with a bit of red... Smile

KK said in Deryni Archives (The book, not the mag) that she figures out how
Alaric and Duncan are descended from Camber. I haven't foul=nd that but I
know Duncan was.

In order:

Camber, Evaine, Rhysel, Tiphane, Fane, Tambert,
Adelicia, Andrew, Jared, Duncan, Dhugal

Kelson is also a child of Camber:

Camber, Evaine, Rhysel, Tiphane, Swynbeth,
Urien, Malcolm, Donal, Brion, Kelson
