The average movie goer's perception of The Good Doctor is
non-existant. The average movie goer will be going to this movie to
see Will Smith and/or the current hottie who is his wife/love
interest/whatever, and will leave the movie with no more or less of a
perception of The Good Doctor than he or she entered the theater with.
The average IA fan, or even just SF fan, will be well-aware of
Follywood proclivities regarding SF movies in general as well as, in
the case of IA fans, what they've done to previous movie versions of
IA's books/stories. If not aware, pre-movie-going, of the I, Robot
howlers, they will quickly realize that it is not "Based on the
classic story collection by famed science fiction writer Isaac Asimov,
"I, Robot""; that Will Smith's "Detective Del Spooner" is a re-named
Elijah Baley; and that "I, Robot - The Deceitful Movie" is a
mishmashed rework of driblets of "The Caves of Steel/The Naked Sun"
combined with an admixture of standard Follywood BS storylines, SF and
otherwise.

[Re: that "current hottie" remark. I checked http://www.imdb.com, and
it appears that Bridget Moynahan [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005256/]
is her. Playing Susan Calvin. Now, the Susan Calvin we grew to know
and love in the robot stories/I, Robot, was a tad older than Bridget
Moynahan - by 30 or 40 years, and was described in terms that pictured
nothing resembling Ms Moynahan. I rest my case. Like "The
Bicentennial Robin Williams", this movie can await my viewing until it
hits the cable TV rounds - if then. "Starship Troopers - The
Verhoaxer Travesty" still awaits my attention.]
[At least for any longer than six minutes - my record for lasting
after dropping in anywhere within the movie - before the overwhelming
urge to put the remote through the TV screen hits me.]

I would be amazed if it was any good.
For works such as Asimov, you really need someone at the helm who was
truly dedicated to putting Asimov's work on screen...much like Peter
Jackson has done for LOTR. I have yet to hear that this is the case for
this movie.

Why punish yourself? I still haven't seen any part of that movie
beyond a few accidental moments while passing through a room where
it was playing.

I haven't, since that three or four tries when it first hit
HBO/SHO/STARZ/whoever. Never have tried that Robin Williams Plays the
Improv as a Robot one.

I just read that "I, Robot" is actually based on an unrelated screenplay originally
called "Hardwired" and is simply being released using the name of Asimov and
"I, Robot" for the sake of science fiction credibility..

It does have a character called Susan Calvin though.

Apparently when they decided to make a movie based on "hardwired", they
thought it would be a good marketing idea to attach a well-known science
fiction name and book title to the movie so it would do better. At that point
they re-wrote the screenplay to incorporate some Asimovian characters and
plot lines. What they ended up with is a movie named after one book, but
resembling the plot of another book.
So what it looks like we are ending up with is Susan Calvin, from the 21 century,
placed in a murder/mystery story that has some ingredients from "Caves of Steel"
and its prequel "Mother Earth". Quite the mish-mash.

Forget the average Joe Six-Pack's perception of Asimov - it's
non-existent. Either that, or they think he was a member of the
Russian royal family before the revolution.
As for the movie - there was no story called 'I, Robot', it was a
collection of short stories, so any movie would most likely be some
sort of new story based on the ideas that ran consistently through
Asimov's robot stories.
There was that screenplay circulating (& published) a few years ago,
but as I understand it, this film has nothing to do with it. I haven't
really looked into various info about it, although someone I worked
with happened to mention that Paul Mercurio (the lead actor in the
Australian film Strictly Ballroom - a professional dancer, not actor)
was involved choreographing the robots.
I suspect 'I, Robot' the film will be related to Asimov the same way
the Robin Williams vehicle 'Bicentennial Man' was. Or 'A.I.' to the
original intentions of Kubrick.
Or it might be great. Definitely one to wait to actually see & make
one's mind up then.

Oddly enough, the 'I, Robot' collection wasn't even the first use of
that name. I think Asimov's publishers 'borrowed' it from someone
else's short story.
As long as it ties in with the old Atari coin-op I'll be fine.

The screenplay was written by Harlan Ellison, as I recall with the
active cooperation of Asimov. It was serialized in _Asimov's Science
Fiction Magazine_. I believe the serialization occurred only after it
became clear that the screenplay would not be used by whatever movie
studio was involved.

Yes, a story by Eando Binder, if memory serves.

When Asimov pointed this out to the publisher, the publisher's response,
supposedly, was "F**k Eando Binder!" (I'd guess that the publisher put
letters where the asterisks are, though.)
