I vaguely recall hearing that the Mutant Massacre's real goal was the
removal of excess mutants from the Marvel Universe, either at the
suggestion of Claremont or Shooter. Can anyone confirm or elaborate?

If that was in intent it failed miserably, since the only mutant killed in
the Massacre who had been introduced BEFORE the Massacre was Annalee, the
elderly projecting empath of the Morlocks. All the others were invented to
appear and die in the Massacre itself.

IIRC there hadn't been much sign of the Morlock population being anything
like as large as it was in the Massacre. So if they were trying to remove
excess mutants, why introduce them in the first place?

There were a few injuries; Kitty, Nightcrawler, Angel, but no fatalities in
the X-Men.

They wanted to get rid of Morlocks, not mutants in general.
