Nantucket in the Nineteenth Century
by by Clay Lancaster
The Indians called their island Nantucket – Far Away land. The first white
settlers and later Quakers came seeking isolation, both from England and
mainland America. Nantucket quickly took root on a peculiar individual
character, and its architecture, art. Local history and many surviving
features still reflect a unique American settlement. The 180 early
photographs, stereographs, maps, paintings and drawings in this book evoke
the Nantucket island experience, which is further elaborated by extensive
captions by noted architectural historian Clay Lancaster. The photographs
are arranged in such a manner as to provide a unique walking tour guide
through historic Nantucket as it exists today.
