OBSIDIAN BUTTERFLY by Laurell K. Hamilton.
Hardcover. Book Club Edition. Currently out-of-print in hardcover. Book and
dust jacket in excellent condition, like new!
'Edward, whose nickname among the vamps and shapeshifters was Death, was
afraid.' Too many series that start off with flair lose their energy, and by
the sixth or seventh book are running on autopilot. Laurell Hamilton appears to
be immune. This ninth adventure of her wisecracking and indomitable vampire
hunter Anita Blake is even better than the last.
This time out, Anita, unable to decide between her vampire and her werewolf
lovers, leaves St. Louis and her messy personal life behind and flies to Santa
Fe at the behest of her sometime colleague Edward. He's a professional hit man
who specializes in preternatural monsters, and Anita has an ambiguous
friendship with him. They respect and maybe even like one another, but she
knows that Edward would kill her in a minute if she were to challenge him.
Anyway, he's become involved in the investigation of some particularly horrific
murders that have taken place in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and he wants Anita
as backup. So she goes expecting the worst.
What she doesn't expect is to find that Edward--he of the empty eyes and icy
heart--has become engaged to a pretty young widow with two kids and, clearly,
no idea of what Edward really does for a living. And the little girl already
thinks of him as Daddy.
Anita, for whom fangs and talons and demons from Hell are all in a day's work,
is appalled. And she's determined to do something about it. Warning: Explicit
language & violence. (386 pp.)
