That was all you had to say. You aren't competent to comment on the scene
until you see it.

PJ obsessed with falls? Sure looks like it. My only question is to those
who are familiar with PJ's earlier work -- is this typical of him or is
it a new thing. I note that his next project, the _King Kong_ remake, is
based on a film with one of the most famous fall-from-a-height scenes in
movie history.

On Wed, 17 Dec 2003 21:16:47 -0600, in a fit of madness Lord Jubjub
<jubjub DeleteThis @ev1.net> declared:

>FOTR had the dwarf-tossing-across-the-chasm-in-the-stairs

I expect there were other examples as well in PJ-FOTR, but it has been
so long since I saw it I mainly don't remember. Oh, the Ring manage to
fall several times, although never from any great height, but it's
small, so in proportion to its "body", it does pretty well. There's the
Balrog and Gandalf drop, but that's taken from the book.

I didn't notice a "fall from a height" fetish in FOTR, but then came
TTT:

>TTT had Aragorn-going-over-the-cliff

By which time he is the third major character to fall from a height
(Gandalf at the Bridge again and Sam at Sauron's Front Gate).

Not to mention Merry or Pippin falls out of Treebeard. Lots of orcs drop
during Helm's Deep, even when they don't have a very good reason to.
Gimli actually drops from a height on purpose. He also falls off his
horse, which may count as a fall from a height given the "short Dwarf"
jokes.

>ROTK had flaming-Denethor-going-over-the-cliff

And Sam falls again. And lots of guys fall off the AT-ATphaunts. The Big
Ol' Searchlight/Eye falls as the Dark Tower collapses. I missed it, but
I read that a Nazgul gets knocked off his flying mount by an Eagle. One
of the orcs takes a major fall in the Tower of Cirith Ungol. I guess I
should consider it a show of restraint that nobody actually fell from
Minas Morgul. Of course, it isn't enough that Gollum should fall into
the Crack of Doom, Frodo has to go too, although he catches himself.

>Maybe PJ should avoid precipes in his next adaptation?

If he can't lose the idea that high place = thing someone falls from,
then that's a good idea.

You missed Gollum's fall off a cliff in the RotK film. The cliff outside
Shelob's lair. This is another example of the "return from death by
falling off a cliff" theme that was used in all three films.

1) FotR: Gandalf falls in Kazad-dum. Returns in TTT.
2) TTT: Aragorn falls off a cliff. Returns later in TTT.
3) RotK: Gollum falls off a cliff. Returns later to fall off another
cliff.

My theory is that the first fall for Gollum, other than to confuse those
in the audience who hadn't read the book, was to avoid people thinking
that Gollum might return from the dead out of the Cracks of Doom.
Apparently, in PJ's world, the first fall never kills you, only the
second.
