I was undergoing a course of retail-therapy the other day and,
browsing in a bookshop, I picked up a copy of Orwell The Observer
Years, a collection of articles and book reviews.
http://books.guardian.co.uk/departments/classics/story/0,6000,953217,00.html
I haven't dipped into it yet, but in the spirit of New year pedantry I
quote from the jacket:
"George Orwell started writing regularly for the Observer in 1942,
filing stories from the home front and North Africa. In 1945, he was
sent to France and Germany as a war correspondent. This volume
collects for the first time all of these articles."
Now that's just wrong isn't it? It implies that he was in North
Africa during the war, whereas he was only there in 1938. You'd think
that someone could have taken the trouble to...
No, no.... pedantry ends.

Nicely spotted, and ouch.
Meanwhile, the McGill-Queen's University Press is advertising *Orwell: The Road
to Airstrip One* by Ian Slater, with release date given as September 26. See
<http://www.mqup.mcgill.ca/book.php?bookid=1653>.
I can't find this one in the a.b.g-o Google archive but it sounds familiar &
appears to have been widely reviewed. Did we talk about this one already in
some way that I'm not finding via mechanical search?
Could be either interesting or dreadful, or maybe both given that Slater's main
claims to fame per <http://www.ian-slater.com/> appear to be military thrillers
that, from the synopses, sound a little paranoid and more than a little like
the "socks in the jaw" style that Orwell made such a point of disliking. Wonder
what Mr. Slater thinks of Miss Blandish?

I was watching Passport to Pimlico the other day and noticed a small
'insert' shot of a Whitehall bigwig's reading material- a whopping great
copy of 'No Orchids'. Just thought I'd mention it.

FYI, this book is about 20 years old and is being reissued. I suppose
due to some spike in his Orwellness. I just last week saw the original
hardcover in a used shop for 20 bucks. I didn't buy it. Looks like a bit
of an eye-glazer to me.
McGill-Queen's Press is an amalgam of two universities, one in
Montreal, one in Kingston, east of Toronto, but if memory serves
Slater is a prof at U of Toronto.

Looking at the page, I see I'm wrong about the last part.
Slater works out in BC.

From the intro to The Observer Years by Jonathan Heawood
"He wrote exactly a hundred articles for the Observer, all published
here. Sad, angry, sometimes severe and often witty, they all display
Orwell's combination of lofty ideals and painful self-awareness. 'If
you look into your own mind, which are you, Don Quixote or Sancho
Panza?' he once asked, 'Almost certainly you are both.' It was the
tension between these two sides, the reaction between idealism and
cynicism, which gave Orwell his peculiar energy, and which did so much
to determine the feel of Astor's Obsever."
