Yes, indeed, but they are listed in chronological order. Given that
there are quite a few children's books in the list, I am surprised
that Animal Farm didn't get the nod over 1984, but this is a
self-confessed idiosyncratic list, which is just the way it should be.
I am currently reading Great Expectations, which did not make the
list, though Copperfield did. Out of the 100 I have read 33 and have
dipped into (but not really read) another 12. Have also seen the
movies of one of two others like To Kill a Mockingbird.

As Mrs. Wilkes would have said: " It's pathetic, isn't it?"

PS I remember seeing the opening scenes of Great Expectations on TV in
England circa 1958, in black and white, of course. It was pretty
scary. Does anyone else here remember that TV version?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

No, it isn't. It is about time for a rewrite of that book, perhaps
entitled Blown Away. Scwarzenegger would be good for the Cary Grant
part of the movie version, though he probably doesn't give a damn for
acting these days.

Personally I was also surprised at the omission of Janet and John Book
Two, which tells the amazing story of Chicken Licken's paranoid
delusion that the sky was about to fall down. I remember that at the
age of 6, this work make an indelible impression on me.

Of course, although it does include Catch 22, the list IS an English
list, and I am sure that an American list of the top 100 novels would
include masterworks such as GWTW and the George Bush autobiography A
Charge To Keep. ACTK is widely recognised as one of the works of
greatest fiction.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Not having read this last masterpiece, I'm feeling deprived here. Might you be willing to favor us with
some excerpts?
