Argh. Right state, but the other end of it. Cleveland is a 5-hour
drive from here. One way.

*Sigh*...

Yeah-- I'm in Columbus, which is a lot closer, but with weather like we had
this weekend, it's sure hard to commit. Can barely get out of my own
driveway!!
DaveL---where are you? Did you see Vonnegut when he was at Ohio Weslyan in
Delaware, OH or at OSU a few years ago??

Also wondering if anyone else in the group saw Vonnegut and Joseph Heller a
few years back at the Eisenhower Center in New Orleans. I just happened to
be there for Jazz Fest and stumbled in to that one, which ended up being
broadcast on C-Span, I believe.

Where in Columbus? My brother lives at the southern end there.

I saw a recording of the C-Span broadcast, which was in May, 1995. There was
another C-Span gig in March (I think) 1997 with Vonnegut, Heller, and
William Styron, which I saw part of.

Hi, Greg. Sunday we were gifted with six inches of snow, and a
quarter inch of ice on top of it for that extra crunchy goodness.

 > DaveL---where are you?

Cincinnati. Home of the infamous dipstick Simon Leis, who does what
he can to keep the city in the consciousness of the rest of the
nation strictly as a bad example.

Never have seen him, in person. Seen him in movies and on TV, is
all. Was tempted to go to Indianapolis a year or two back when he
was going to speak there, despite the five hour round trip, but it
just didn't work out on the calendar.

In answer to Andre, I leave in an eastern suburb of Columbus called
Pickerington.

DaveL-- You really have to go see him. Remember, he's in his 80's---never
know how many more chances you'll get (God forbid!). He was very fun in his
formal talks, but the real treat for me was when he went outside for the
inevitable smoke afterwards. At Ohio Wesleyn, he must have sat talking to
the (mainly student) crowd for at least an hour, answering questions and
telling stories. My favorite was an answer to a young woman who asked him
what his greatest (or finest or best) memory was. He said that there was a
poll conducted by Playboy, in which they asked of multiple celebs, "What's
better than sex?". Vonnegut said that he was in Norway (I think) with his
European publisher when they posed the question to him. They were out hiking
somewhere and there had been an early frost. They came upon a berry tree
with the fruit frozen on the branches. He said he took one off and popped it
in his mouth. Vonnegut then leaned back on the bench he was sitting on and
smiled and said, "that sure was swell!"
It was just a beautiful and totally unexpected answer. I was sitting right
beside him and all I could think of was the typical things (the birth of my
kids, etc).
Guess that's why he's an artist and I'm not.
Anyway, those things make the trip well worth it.
DaveL, you may want to venture North---despite the weather!!!

And then there's his arch-nemesis Jerry Springer at the other end of the
spectrum. A match made in heaven... Smile

Yeah, Jerry went into sleaze tv in Chicago, after a lengthy stint
here in Cincinnazi. As a mayor, as a tv news editorialist, and then
as a tv anchor, he was top cabin. I dunno why he decided to ruin
his reputation by going on the trailer-trash talking-head circuit
with all the other people who ruined their reputations in that (e.g.
Maury Povich), but I assume it was strictly for the $$$.
