I used to have a friend with all the Asimov books, who told me that there
was a 'proper' order to read them in, so that everything happened in the
correct chronological order.
Sadly, I'm no longer in contact with her, but I was hoping that someone out
there would know the order, or a website where I might be able to find a
timeline or something, so that I can buy them a couple at a time, and be
able to get the most from them.
Thanks in advance

In theory, the books can be read in chronological or publication order.
Neither is really correct--as the later published books will have spoilers
for the later chronological books:
FWIW, Here is the chronological order:
I, Robot (The Complete Robot)
The Caves of Steel
The Naked Sun
The Robots of Dawn
Robots & Empire
The Stars, Like Dust
The Currents of Space
Pebble in the Sky
Prelude to the Foundation
Forward the Foundation
Foundation
Foundation and Empire
Second Foundation
Foundation's Edge
Foundation & Earth
There are reference to End of the Eternity and Nemesis in the series. Also
the 2nd Foundation series by Benford, Bear and Brin could be inserted after
Forward the Foundation and before Foundation.

Well, surely your friend owned all the Asimov *Foundation* books, or
something like that. There are few, indeed, who own *all* of Asimov's
books.
The best thing to do is to check the FAQ, which covers this topic. You
can find it at <http://www.asimovonline.com/asimov_FAQ.html>.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Order to read books in? |

I do.
well, almost (missing one, have a photocopy of that one and don't
remind me about copyrights. I made the copy for my own personal use,
and plan on discarding it as soon as I get an original.)
BTW John, you wouldn't have an extra copy of _Ginn Science Program,
Advanced Level B_ laying around, would you? (lol)
I am currently reading all of Isaac's published work in book form in
the order of publication. That is my recommended order for reading.

Well, I was thinking of you as one of the few exceptions.

I wish. I wish I had *any* copy of it.

This time through, I'm taking them in chronological order within
categories: all the sf novels, all the sf anthologies, all the
astronomy books, all the F&SF essay collections. It's a good order, too.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Order to read books in? |

Well at the risk of upsetting someone
Foundation
Foundation and Empire
Second Foundation
and don't bother with the rest!
No really. They are not of the same standard as the original trilogy.
Of course I am not commenting on the Robot series as they are a different

Are you serious?! Do you truly mean ALL his books or all of is Fiction
Books? When you look at ALL of them, fiction, short essay collections and
non-fiction individual and compendium that's over 400 books!

A Severe Strain on the Credulity
As a method of sending a missile to the higher, and even to the
highest parts of the earth's atmospheric envelope, Professor Goddard's
rocket is a practicable and therefore promising device. It is when one
considers the multiple-charge rocket as a traveler to the moon that one
begins to doubt... for after the rocket quits our air and really starts
on its journey, its flight would be neither accelerated nor maintained by
the explosion of the charges it then might have left. Professor Goddard,
with his "chair" in Clark College and countenancing of the Smithsonian
Institution, does not know the relation of action to re-action, and of the
need to have something better than a vacuum against which to react... Of
course he only seems to lack the knowledge ladled out daily in high
schools.

[More like over 500, but who besides David, aka e4e5, is *really*
worried about the exact count? ;->]
Had you been hanging around here regularly over the years,
William, you would have been able to track David's progress
towards his goal of owning one copy of everything in the IA Opus
listing. Not least of all by the increasingly frequent
plaints^Wrequests, in inverse proportion to the number of works
left to be obtained.
For someone posting from an *.edu, you don't read and apply logic
too good, William. The item David was asking for as the last
*real* item he needs was a non-fiction, textbook-type item.
Simple deduction ["Elementary, my dear Watson"] should have
suggested that he was indeed speaking of "... ALL of them,
fiction, short essay collections and non-fiction individual and
compendium ...". ;->

well over 500, I include 516 on my count, most others about 510. I
include the two revisions of _Biochemistry and Human Metabolism_, 3
'books' that do not appear on the list that apparently Isaac himself
forgot about, and the latest release of _Return of the Black
Widowers_. Oh yes, and is the original _Intelligent Man's Guide to
Science_ one book or two, since it was published in two volumes? So
give or take a few from the above counts.
In all I have almost 700 books that have Isaac Asimov's name on the
cover, including the "Isaac's Universe" series, "Ask Isaac Asimov",
and "Robot City" series, to name a few obviously not BY Isaac but
authorised by him, or a continuation of series after he died like the
_Ask Isaac Asimov_ series.

Good summation, Ogden
**sigh** that one still remains elusive.
By the way, I lost count at about 1600, but I am progressing toward my
goal of getting a copy of all of the 'first published' works of short
stories, essays, introductions and editorials, from _Boy's Life_ to
_Gallery_ or should I say from _Amazing Stories_ to _Isaac Asimov's
Science Fiction Magazine_.
As I stated earlier, I am currently reading the books in the order
published. I am now reading #118 on the official list _Biographical
Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, New Revised Edition_
Too bad I can't read as fast as Isaac could type...
