While the favourite book thing is being brought up here I might as well pose
this question (a quick google seems to reveal it hasn't been done before but
I feel it *must* have but anyway) what is your favourite Orwell novel and
what do you think is his best?
My answer, in both cases is Coming Up For Air.

I think we did play this game before and you'll be happy to know that Alan
agreed with you.
IIRC I defended "A Clergyman's Daughter," but only out of cussedness. Not sure
of my favorite now.
Others -- ?

Yes but you have to decide which it is-- that is the *game* innit?

All right, then, if we're limited to choosing among novels, *1984* is probably
my choice now. Not polished or healthy stuff, in fact written with a
punch-drunk willingness to write crudely and unscruplulously for the sake of
making an impression. Orwell had absorbed too much of the mood of the
militarist propaganda he was trying to expose, and in fact that's probably why
the hard-minded, censorious kind of anti-communists have found the book so
congenial. But it memorably names so many things that it would be difficult to
criticize if one couldn't name them. It's an essential book. It's just that
other people have written better novels.
Fair enough, Robbie?

Of course! A good reasoned argument. 1984 is like a sort of hellish
'photographic negative' version of CUFA don't you think?

Here's a thought I had last century:

Another last-century thought (also re CUFA being my favourite):
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?selm=rQuTReAoDwP4EwFn%40devesons.demon.co.uk&output=gplain" target="_blank">http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?selm=rQuTReAoDwP4EwFn%40devesons.dem...co.uk&o</a>
Sorry for unoriginal musing -- it's deadline time again.

Deadline time here too, and yet here I am wasting time.
I don't know about CUFA. There's a lot of wonderful stuff in it, but I can't get past the
artificiality of Orwell imagining what it might be like to be fat and conventional. Seems like
he drags in Wodehouse and Flaubert to fill a gap in his own imagination.

On the grounds that a grown-up gourmand might get fat on savories?
Sure, it's possible -- but shouldn't a person of Bowling's advertised character
be a little more self-indulgent generally?
