A bete noire of mine is what I term the
"shipping charge scrounge." These vile
bottom-of the-barrel-scrapers" list a book
for a penny or two, but of course SELL it
for the shipping charge plus the penny.
In the U. S., for instance, a light hardcover
book, such as a popular novel or self-
help book, might be mailed for $2.25
using Standard Media Mail (that is,
Media Mail with no tracking or insurance).
If the sellers are buying their mailing
envelpes in bulk, they might get them
for 50 cents each (r almost $1.50 if they
are charing .99 centes. If the seller,
such as Amazon reimburses $3.49,
our Shipping-Charge Scrounge might
be making 50 cents or more on the deal.
As far as his cost for the item sold, that
might be 10 cents or less, since he is
buying popular books of which there is
an over-supply, and buying in bulk.
Anyway, I shudder to think of the
operation that makes its money this
way -- I get the image of a fat guy
in a sweaty white shirt and vest,
chomping on a cigar butt while
barking out orders while
watching a fxw vastly-underpaid
unfortunates scurrying around a
dingy warehouse, frantically
ushing bins of books...
