I went last night to see the movie with my daughters
and boyfriends(all in their 20's),my 9 year old son,and my wife.They
all loved it.I did not.I didn't hate it,but I kept waiting for things
from the book to happen, but it seems they changed just about
everything. The names of people, and places were the same, but that seems
to be about it.Can anyone name something that was the same as in the
book?I agree with the 40+ post of James Hyder above!

when i went to see "Name of the Rose" i felt the same thing. the film's
colophon dubbed the film a "palimpsest" of the novel, which is really what
LOTR film is. it seems to be more an impression than a setting. i don't know
what the threshold that a filmmaker's loyalty to the literary entity ought
to be. but when i found myself getting depressed about it (saw ROTK last
night), i tried to just let go of the book as much as i could and try to be
told a visual story.

Of the three, RoTK is obviously the most butchered. No Prince Imrahil of
Dol Amroth !!??. Faramir is drug to the city gates by his horse !! No
Beregond showing Pippin around the city. No Rangers !? No Houses of
Healing. No wild men. Denethor unrecognizable. No realtionship between the
King of Rohan and Merry. Eowyn is beautiful - but too beautiful - that is
not Eowyn.

No scouring of the Shire !!!!?????!!!!

Everything all rushed into a few days time (like the whole movie trilogy) !?
Does not Mr. Jackson bother to at least inform himself about seige warfare,
if he can't bother to read Tolkien ?

Ugh!

A bit of this is clearly in the trailer, so it has been filmed. It can
probably be moved to your top category.

Except it's not butchered, nor were any of the three.

And they don't butcher pigs to make sausage either!

They 'adapt' them to fit the 'new medium'.

That makes about as much sense as any analogy you have used (which of
course is none at all).

It's hard to believe that the New Line moneychangers could be that stupid.
Now that the movies have succeeded equaling their wildest dreams, why would
they suddenly get cold feet? Anything PJ might do with the EE is assured
of fantastic success, with zero risk.

Hey softrat, would you like to actually talk about the book or the movie or
do you simply have no more intellectual ammunition left?

Of course they were. Thoroughly.

Actually the more I think about it, butchering is not a bad metaphor at all
for what PJ has done to LoTR. Cut out the fat (what he sees as fat,
anyway); sliced up into parts and rearranged and packaged to be sold; made
sausage of some bits, steaks of some bits, kept the tender loin in tact, and
threw away lots and lots of good, good stuff. Kept a roast or two back to
be sold later on.

Yes. Butchered. Thoroughly.

All PJ would have to do is refuse to do it. They could threaten to
sue him of course, but considering they'll have pulled in the
neighborhood of 2-3 BILLION dollars, it won't look good at all.

They wouldn't be that stupid. This is complete twaddle, just like most
things begin with the phrase 'Word is...'
