Q) If you were standing on the ring would you be able to actually See
the curve rising above you or would things look like the land was flat
and in the distance would fade as the atmosphere occluded the landscape.

I would think that the scale of the curveture would be too great to see the
ring in daylight. but at night the sun would be shining on the opposite side
so some of the ring would be visible. I think this is refered to as the
arch, as in seeker looking for the base of the arch.

You should be able to see the darker parts of the "night" spots cast by the
shadow rings, even in daylight, I would think. Though the other side of the
ring would be invisible, hidden behind the star/sun.
