I saw "Paycheck" at the flicks last night.

My brain is still trying to tie the plot into a PKD story I remember -
I'm sure I've read it, but can't remember - given the plot, this is more
than a little scary! I will have to dig it up and have a read.

I thought the film was Ok. Not nearly as good as Minority Report or
Bladerunner. The atmosphere didn't feel nearly PKD enough, though. I'd
probably rank it very slightly below "Total Recall", and slightly above
"Scanners" on the quality of the film alone.

I gather that "Imposter" was dreadful - I haven't seen it, and cannot
find it on DVD yet - it would be nice to see it, just to see how it
really was, since critics can often get it wrong. In fact, I saw Jonathon
Ross's review of "Paycheck", and you would have thought from his review
that it was the worst film of all time.

Worst film of all time? Well, it's a darned sight better than "Titanic",
and that won 11 oscars! But then everything is better than "Titanic", I
guess! Wink

My main criticism of the film (ignoring the lack of PKD-ish-ness) was
that it seemed a little thin. Maybe the original story was a little too
short for a feature film - I normally hate directors adding to the
originals too much, but maybe that's the way to do it with a short story.

Worth buying on DVD when it's out if it's needed to complete a collection
of PKD films.

My top-5 PKD films? (Imposter not seen yet)

1 Bladerunner
2 Minority Report
3 Total Recall
4 Paycheck
5 Scanners

I've not been awfully well the last few years - wish I could get back
into reading - I can't believe I've been depending on Hollywood recently
to deliver PKD to me.

That's hard to reconcile for me, since I concede that BR is top-notch,
but I despise MR (the movie). I indeed prefer TR as an amusement than MR
as a pretentious failure.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Each to their own, I guess. I just found TR a little lacking in credible
detail (eg: probe out down nose), but I guess judging any of these films
on such details as being a little unrealistic!

I must admit, I wonder if he left his brain in the changing room,

That should, of course, been "Dressing room". Now, I wonder where my
brain is.... I know I left it somewhere.

Here's a review I wrote about Impostor when it came out in the UK

Not particularly worthwhile incidentally ( the film, not the review I
hope!)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I just saw Paycheck last night. I wouldn't call it a great film, but it's
far from the worst film of all time. (These days, I'd place Van Helsing
somewhere on that list.) Paycheck was fun. Paycheck made me think. It had
some nice action pieces and some intriguing character development. I may
have liked this film more than Minority Report.

Paycheck captured the near-future that was so common to PKD's work quite
well--the future is just like today, only grimier and with strange tech.
Blade Runner got that right. Total Recall got that right. Minority Report
didn't. Paycheck had a "ripped from tomorrow's headlines" feel to it. I
liked that feeling.

The acting was mostly competent. Ben Affleck was nothing special in the
lead. Uma Thurman had some good moments, but her first few appearances
verged upon the dreadful. Aaron Eckhart, though, oozed sliminess at every
opportunity.

I thought it was fun. I thought the film hit its PKD marks squarely. I
don't know if I'll watch it again anytime soon, but Paycheck will have a
place in my DVD collection for a long time to come.

Yep, I'd agree with that - MR was just too shiny.
