Hey Ya'all,

Due to work I arrived late at yesterdays chat but an interesting line of
speculation did come up.

Item 1; Teela ate Tree-Of-Life in the map of Mars garden. The TOL virus
coursed through her system infecting all her living cells and adding the
Protector stage genetic sequences to her DNA. As a result she fell into a
coma and metamorphised into a human Protector stage being.

Item 2; As part of the metamorphasis all of her hair fell out, not only on
her head but also all over her body as well. The DNA in the cells of her
hair would be completely uneffected by the TOL virus because their is no
metabolism taking place in any cells outside of the hair roots.

Item 3; Teela is from Known Space, which has a history of successful human
cloning going back at least to the GIL the ARM stories.

Item 4; As a protector Teela knows she needs descendents, and she can grow
completely human clones of herself. It might be considered luck to have a
couple dozen copies of herself, after all they are the only descendents she
will ever have.

Item 5; Teela might be a good enough gene slicer to remove parts of an X
chromosome to convert it into a Y chromosome, this would give her the
abillity to grow male clones based solely on her own DNA.

Item 6; Failing at #5 above Teela could create a transgenetic male
descendent by replacing one of her X chromosomes with a Y chromosome from a
closely related hominid, probably from the Map of Earth.

Item 7; Either way Teela is very likely to have reproduced herself and have
planted a tribe of Earth normal humans amidst the population of Ringworld
hominids. With a thousand distinct lines of hominids one more would be hard
to notice, especially if they are 'lucky'.

Item 8; One alternative suggested, I think it was by Django, is that Teela
would expect Louis to irradiate a large (5%) area of the Ringworld and cause
the native hominids there to die of radiation poisening. She could have
pre-positioned tribes of her descendents in this region, probably in the 1%
near the center of the region, in Stasis chambers set to open after the
radiation storm and die off. If the chambers are set to open after the
chambers senses the radiation storm they are still sealed, the radiation
storm never took place. If the chambers were on timers then Teela's
descendents are buisily reproducing in this region.

Item 9; I also suggested that these descendents would have been planted in
many places around the ring, some of them very difficult to reach like the
World Maps in the two Great Oceans, or in one of the spaceport ledge cities
where the City Builder rim transport system doesn't reach and they would be
protected from both other hominids and the radiation storms.

Item 10; Does Teela's Luck require that she as a protector would take this
tactic and spread her descendents far and wide on the Ringworld? If Louis
becomes a Protector it is even easier for him to take this path, he has all
the X and Y chromosomes he needs to have 'fully human' descendents, he has
the Carlos Wu designed molecular nanobot autodoc that reads DNA sequences
and could grow baby clones with ease from a small sample. How long until
'Star Planet People' hominids show up on the Ringworld in noticable numbers?

Any thoughts, comments and conversation welcome!

Allen W.

Teela's clones would all smell like herself, NOT like her children. Remember,
A Pak knows a child by smell, not sight. She would feel no motivation to
protect them.

I'm not so sure.

They would smell like FAMILY, so should make the cut.

(Look, an On Topic thread).

I agree fully, even if they smell like baby Teela's they would smell like
family because identical twins are after all family. What I mean is imagine
a scenario where a pair of twins are born. To conserve genes the PAK place
one of the twin babies in a stasis chamber while the other matures through
Breeder stage and on into PAK stage. Once the normal time twin is a
Protector the other twin is released from Stasis so that it can become a
breeder and produce more children of that genetic line. Would the first
Twin who is now protector stage ignore the second twin? Highly doubtful
IMO.

As demonstrated in a British TV documentary about identical twins a few
years ago, a sniffer dog can easily distinguish their scent trails.

In fact, the second could probably be placed under that Protector's
protection.

Have a great day!
