thanks
Kzanol's personality isn't split: that's two personalities in one body.
Kzanol's personality is duplicated: one personality duplicated in too
different bodies.
When Greenberg engages in telepathy with someone, he wakes up with
memories of being Greenberg, and memories of being the other person.
It's normally easy for him to decide which memories were his, and which
were borrowed, because his own memories include the knowledge that he's
a telepath. However, Kzanol was used to controlling other people's
minds. As a result, Kzanol's memories, residing in Greenberg's head,
were strong enough to leave Greenberg with the strong conviction the he
was actually Kzanol. As the story moves along, Greenberg gets a
steadily better idea of what's going on, and he eventually realizes
that he's not Kzanol. However, the Kzanol personality is so strong that
it keeps control of Greenberg even after that realization. "Copy of
Kzanol" recognises that the Thrint is the real Kzanol, but still thinks
of himself as Kzanol.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
