Did anyone else check up on pure finders? I did and it's true - there were
pure finders in Victorian England and their finds were used in the tanning
industry. Full marks to RR for this bit (or something that rhymes with
"bit") of history.

Is this a hospital?

There was a series on BBC2 about the greatest industrial inventions. One was
about the London Sewerage system and what life was like before it was built.
Apparently people were paid to go around with buckets and if anyone felt the
need for a "jimmy", they could use the bucket. The collected stuff was used
for softening leather.
Lovely, makes you glad artificial fibres were invented.
Reminds me of Blackadder 2. When Edmund was trying to sell his house he
mentioned the benefits of open-air waste disposal. The woman he said it to
replied "You mean you crap out of the window? Good, I can't stand those
indoor privies."
Plenty of 'pure' to find in those days then.

Wasn't it also used somehow in making tweed?

(Yes, it is - I've just looked it up on google.)

What I'd like to know, though, is how people figured out this sort of thing.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

And what did they think they were doing when they discovered it?
