Wow, it's so quiet in this NG. I wonder why. I know a lot of Anne Rice
fans and we talk a lot, so how about a new thread to get some juice going.
What's everyone's top 3 AR books??
Mine are:
Blood Canticle
The Mummy
Mayfair Witches Saga
Now, I know the last one isn't ONE book, but i couldn't pick just one.

The Vampire Lestat
Memnoch the Devil
Tale of the Body Theif
But I must say, The only Anne Rice books I've read are the first seven
Vampire Chronicles (through Merrick). I'm going to take a break from the
vampires and start on the Mayfair series - Merrick has sparked an interest.

I've noticed quite a few people didn't like Blood Canticle. Care to go in
more depth why you hated it?
Although, I agree with you on Violin.

It was a hurried and hack piece of work. Lestat, a sophisticated creature,
says dude, yo and other outdated slang throughout the book.
Besides that, the characterizations are wrong. It seemed to me that Anne
wanted to start another 'unholy' family--with Quinn as the pseudo Louis and
Mona as the pseudo Claudia.
Also, this is the last book in the Chronicles, or so she says and there is
no David, Armand, Marius etc. Maharet, a rather powerful telepath can only
communicate thru email. Kayman goes to Blackwood Farm while there aren't
any vampires there to talk to Quinn's family (or whatever you call them).
Louis is mentioned in passing as being weak (I thought Lestat's blood was
supposed to cure that) and someone else mentions he's good-looking. Well,
duh.
Mona, who was rather interesting, is now a whiny witch, Quinn is a non
entity--totally whipped. Julian appears to haunt Lestat thru the
book--completely sucking any personality out of my fav witch. The Patsy
thing is as Mary Sue as you can get. I mean really, fan fic by some of the
worst authors could come up with something more meaningful. The Patsy thing
is just sort of thrown in.
To give just one example of the writing in this book In the beginning
Lestat says how he loves this computer age, and indeed uses computers to
write his books (see QOTD). Somewhere near the middle thou, Lestat turns
stupid and is amazed at the computer and what it can do. What?
The main reason though I hate this book is the enforced romance between
Lestat and Rowan. Rowan--the women who pimped her underage niece on her
husband, left him to drown, etc--becomes the 'pure love' of Lestat's life.
Also, people are stupid. The mom of Quinn's boy (I forget her name) sits on
Lestat's lap and DOESN'T NOTICE the icy skin.
Also, what happened with the Talamasca war? Sterling seems awful chummy
with them. Oh, and I hope you like Saint Juan Domingo, cause he's mentioned
more than anyone else.
Oh, and don't miss the part in the beginning about the infallibility of the
Pope.
In short, this is not a Vampire book, but a Witches book. And a bad Witches
book at that.
These are my reasons, among others. And don't give me Stan dying. Authors
have written decent books thru all sorts of tragedy. This was Anne telling
her readers: "you wanted it, you got it. Now shut up and be happy."
Thanks.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Quiet |

My favourites are: Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, and
Tale of the Body Thief.
I agree that Anne should have stopped the chronicles at Memnoch,
though I enjoyed The Vampire Armand to a certain extent, I couldn't
stand Merrick, found Blackwood Farm marginally better, and Blood
Canticle appalling for all the reasons so excellently enunciated by
karenftx.
Also I think that personally, as a former Catholic who has become an
atheist, I can't really connect with Anne Rice's "I've rediscovered my
Catholicism and want to tell you all what a wonderful religion it is!",
I really connect with the atheistic, truth-seeking Lestat of the earlier
books.

Not to mention that in Tale of the Body Thief, Lestat is skilled
enough with computer code to hack into police mainframes to track
serial killers....but by Blood Canticle he can't even send an email.

Well, considering Lestat's level of "purity" they make a pretty good
match, but I agree, this matchup stretches the limits of "suspended
disbelief" and made me want to throw the book against the wall. We
also have to remember that although there are several years between
the books themselves. Blood Canticle picks up on same night that
Blackwood Farm ended. So in the space of a few days Lestat has fallen
in love with Quinn to the point of telling Quinn he is going to be a
pain in the ass for a while, then a few days later he's falling all
over himself about Rowan. Lestat can be shallow, but not that shallow.
Even the development is of that relationship is vague with no
believability to it.

It's Jasmine. If Lestat has fed he wouldn't be icy, but I seem to
recall after Queen of the Damn, cold or warm, Lestat feels hard like a
marble statue...you think if nothing else THAT would be noticed by the
dimbulb. They also never notice that the trio is never seen during the
day, doesn't eat, etc. etc.
>
> Also, what happened with the Talamasca war? Sterling seems awful chummy > with them.
I was wondering about that myself. I don't remember exactly, but
weren't David, Louis, and Lestat so concerned that they were going to
leave New Orleans for awhile? I might be wrong on that one. Now Lestat
and Sterling are tooling about in Sterling's little automobile.
Oh, and I hope you like Saint Juan Domingo, cause he's mentioned more
than anyone else.
Oh, jeez, yes. I got so sick of hearing about this guy. But I have to
say the thing that got me the most was having been told, basically,
that I was an idiot because I didn't "get" the greatness of Memnoch
the Drivel at the very start of Blood Canticle. Nothing like trying to
endear your fans to you. I guess it doesn't really have anything to do
with it being an unimaginative book and a Lestat as unrecognizable as
the one in Blood Canticle.
All in all, Blood Canticle is a stunning example of what happens when
the author decides to throw the continuity of her own universe out the
window...that book was laughable it was so bad.
Take care,
Ashe

ONE book for me is The Witching Hour... it's the first I read under her real
name (was years later when I discovered she had written Exit to eden under a
psuedonym and I'd already read it!).
It will always be the best book for me.
The Vampire saga... I like The Vampire Lestat... IWAV was.... too dull and
full of boring description. Lestat was wonderful.
I also like Feast of All Saints, Cry to Heaven and Servant of the Bones.
