If the current magnetic field collapses, a new magnetic field in the
upper atmosphere appears that is almost as strong as the current one.
This happens within less than an hour, only on the sunlit side of earth,
and should be more than enough to protect earth from most harmful
radiation.

This effect has already been observed on Venus (that doesn't have a
natural magnetic field) and has been recently simulated for earth.
The result surprised a lot of people. Not that such a magnetic field
starts (see Venus) but how strong it is.

So, you needn't have any fear for your health once earth's magnetic
field vanishes.

Sorry, I have only a german link for the specifics.
Considering how important that discovery is, there should have popped up
news about this all over the net by now.
After all, it messes up a lot of flashy "planet killer" "documentaries"
that seem to have become so popular in the recent years.

The suggestion didn't seem to be to have Cecelia instead of nurse anne, but
Cecelia and nurse anne. And that would make more sense, Cecelia doesn't want
to be a superhero, and the X-Men (as nurse anne mentions herself) need a
doctor.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Yeah, but no one makes "planet non-killer" documentaries, or
movies. I think I read about it in BBC News Online's Science
section, though.

Do remember that while the Earth's core magnetic field is
switched off, the atmosphere gradually blows away in the solar
wind - so if and when it finally /stays/ switched off (e.g., when the
core cools down and sets solid, or maybe a while before that),
/then/ we're screwed - unless they think of something else for that.

I don't know about you, but I know plenty of documentaries about
astronomy and space that don't end with something like "if that happens
it could mean the end of humanity".
But agreed, they are getting fewer, which means that documentaries are
getting worse and worse.

There are still movies, even movies about space, that do not involve a
threat to earth.

Thank God.

Someday, someone whill have to explain to me then why Venus still has
such a dense atmosphere although it is exposed to much more solar wind
than Earth and does not have a magnetic field to protect it.

That was my feeling. Cecelia is a doctor while Annie is a nurse. Last
I heard Cece had set up shop in Salem Center. Why not make the jump up
to the school to do her job?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Well, she prefers general practice - and mutant care is probably a
specialism. She doesn't want to be an X-Man, she wants to be a
doctor, why drag her in?

And since evidently the editors and writer don't want to use her...

Er, yes. You can probably tell I'm just repeating what I was told, I
haven't been there myself, but, specifically, it's lost hydrogen,
water, and oxygen is also observable in the magnetotail - blowing
away.

It isn't fair play to speculate that Venus and Earth both may have a
magnetic field that comes and goes, and that Venus's is switched
off /temporarily/, but, you never know, eh?

But that's the problem: she was good character that was insufficiently
explored; she shouldn't go to waste.

Every character has some potential. If the current ones don't have a
story for her, they shouldn't be forced to shoehorn her in.

As posted on ComiX-Fan recently, Nunzio DeFilippis says that when he
and Christina Weir inquired about her status in order to possibly use
her, they were told by an editor that she died in Weapon X....
