She has a new one coming about in October. Blood Canticle will be the
last vampire chronicle, but I don't know if she's taken time off from
writing. As far as this newsgroup, I've seen it quiet before but never
this quiet. Maybe it is dying a slow death.
Take care,

I came to the newsgroup fairly recently; a bit after Blackwood Farm I think, so
I just assumed that the small amount of posting was normal...
Were there a lot of posts re: Blackwood Farm? Since this is Ann's most recent
book, I would have thought there would be lots of posts regarding the book.
My mouth is watering for Blood Canticle. I am hoping and wishing that there
are some out of the ordinary shockers in that book. I know we've already
discussed this, but I would truly like to see Lestat have a lasting
relationship for once, whether it's with Rowan or someone else doesn't really
matter to me. I just would like to see someone love HIM back for good.
Hmmm...I wonder if that's a running theme throughout the books? And if so,
why? Is Lestat unlovable? Seems no one is ever able to love him. Or maybe I
should say "tolerate him?" There are so many of the books that I haven't read
in a while such as TOTBT and QOTD. But I seem to remember Gretchen(?) seeing
the "real" Lestat and losing her mind. LOL! Hey, what's his name lost his
mind too....his lover and best friend from TVL.....I forget his name, but know
that you all will know who I speak of... Yikes! It's on the tip of my
tongue...how could I forget this?!?...The guy who played the violin...
Interesting that two people that have made love to Lestat have both gone
bonkers! Maybe we'll find Dora has gone mad also in the Canticle. (Excuse me
if I'm rembering her name incorrectly). After all, she had a little somethin'
somethin' with Lestat in Memnoch.
Well anyhoo, I just hope BC is not a let down. How in the world can all these
books be neatly wrapped up? TVChronicles AND the Mayfairs all wrapped up in
one last book? I think not...I hope its not a cheat.... >> Stay informed about: RIP ARAR? |

Is it really that surprising? Many of Anne's former obsessed fans
(such as myself) no longer read her work. I stopped after the debacle
that was Memnoch the Drivel. The heyday of this group was in the
mid-1990s before Anne's writing went down the toilet. I'll lurk every
few months or so to see what's up, but this is the first time I've
posted in over 3 years.
Bottom line: when the books offer no juicy content to discuss, what
reason is there to post in a forum such as this? Sad really. ABAR
used to be a great place to play.

It's unfortunate that you didn't like Memnoch the Devil. Although it was
quite different from the previous books, it was well written. I believe it
was the one book that hit me the most when I finally finished it. It
actually produced some great emotions in me. *Shrug* To each their own.
I'm a great fan of the Mayfair series. I had hoped she would come out with
more of that type of book, but other than a bit of "Merrick" it really
hasn't happened.
Blackwood Farms was okay, but not the best.
I FINALLY go around to read her Sleeping Beauty series. I'd put it off for
a very long time, thinking I wouldn't like it. It wasn't what I expected
and I have to say I read all three books rather quickly. I was
unfortunately hoping for more!
Anyways, just my thoughts.

Laura,
I think I vaguely remember you. You must have stopped posting not long
after I started. Blood Canticle will be the last Rice book I read, at
least, that is my feeling right now. I think it is time to end the
series and, sadly, I think Memnoch was the book that started the slow
death. I mean, where do you go from there? Rice has said that she is
changing her direction, I hope it renews her creativity.
However, I have noticed over the course of the last books that her
religion is coming to the surface more and more. I think it was always
there, especially, in the chronicles, but now it is blantant. If I
want to read a religious work I'll read the work of a theologian, not
a fiction writer. Oh..wait....they could be construde as the same
thing by some, ha ha.
Take care,

Looks like we're on the same page here. I always felt that Anne made
Memnoch a VampChron book cuz if she had entitled it more accurately,
like "My Thoughts on Catholicism," no one would have bought it.
One can posit all sorts of reasons why Anne's writing of the past 8
years isn't up to the quality of her older works--she's getting lazy,
she's getting greedy, she's taking her fans for granted, etc.
However, my guess is that the shift is purely cuz she's getting older.
She is in "crone" space now, and the hot sexual energy of her writing
25 years ago is just gone. How can she write about it in any real way
when she's probably not running it in her body any more?
Her continued exploration of religion in her recent books is crone
energy all the way. While I can appreciate that Anne continues to
grow and move into new interests in her life, I can still bemoan the
loss of a great writing talent. And.....stop giving her any more of
my money.

Yep. I know I've posted this a million times before, but I heard that
Memnoch the Drivel wasn't originally a VC. It had a new character as
the lead and was supposed to be a stand alone novel. If it had been
left that way I probably would have enjoyed it more. However, Lestat
is so unrecognizable in this story that it is as if Rice did a search
and replace along with some minor editing and him the lead character.
It is my least favorite book in terms of continuity with the other VC,
characterisation, originality and creativity. The idea she came up
with was great in that so much could have been done with it, but she
basically gave us a rehash of Faust.
I know all the hoopla about Rice and editors, but I absolutely can not
believe that her publisher allowed it to be published as it was. I
would think that someone might have said something along the lines
that characterization and continuity with the other novels was
missing.

From our side of the fence we can't say that she has gotten lazy,
greedy or started disregarding her fans because we don't know her.
Someone close to her could say that if that was the case, but we
can't. So I'm not going to accuse her of those things.
However, I can agree with you that age is changing her writing
processes and, as I said in my earlier post, I do hope that going in a
new direction sparks a new creativity in her.
>Her continued exploration of religion in her recent books is crone

Absolutely, I agree with you....that moving inward, the new emphasis
in her spirituality, and the solitude that all that
brings...definitely crone energy.
I have purchased all the VC novels, as well as, the Mayfair series.
But it has been through places like Half-price books since Memnoch.
I'll probably purchase Blood Canticle as well through HP so that I
have a complete collection. To some, it doesn't matter if they have
all the books in the series or not, especially, if they thought it
wasn't a good book, but I like having the entire set good, bad, or
otherwise.
Take care,

Friday, if you liked Memnoch try Faust. It is the same plot line and
subject matter. In concept, Rice lifted Memnoch from Faust so if you
enjoyed one you'll probably enjoy the other as well. I know that many
people really liked Memnoch so I will usually suggest Faust to them. I
think that also might be reason why I didn't like Memnoch, I had
already read Faust years before.
>I'm a great fan of the Mayfair series. I had hoped she would come out with

Unless Rice changes her mind I don't think we'll see a continuation of
the Mayfair series proper. As a part of her new direction she has
stated that she's letting go of the vampires and the witches.
>Blackwood Farms was okay, but not the best.
For me, Blackwood Farm was a really strange book as far as my reaction
to it. I liked the story very much, like the characterization of
Quinn, like the new maturity and evenhandedness that Lestat is
showing, but it bothers me overall that this isn't an original story.
There are so many elements in that we've seen a dozen times before in
the Mayfair books and the VC that it was as if she looked through the
older books, pulled out elements she liked, and worked another story
around them. While this might be acceptable in the old specs, it isn't
acceptable from a professional author. So I can say that I liked the
story but didn't enjoy the book. I know that sounds highly illogical,
but that's the best way to describe my feelings about BF.

Ashe
