They arent notebooks, they are small manuscripts, one two pages and one
nine. I cannot share pieces of it, to do so would break copyright laws
concerning the dissemination of unpublished material.
Kerouac's involvement with Burroughs was deep and seminal concerning
his philosophical and metaphysical outlook of art. On January 21, 1945,
Kerouac administered morphine intramuscularly in the company of
Burroughs. His thoughts whilst his high ARE found in a notebook titled
"Notes gleaned from a voyage to Morphina." Another notebook
contemplates the "Artist of Today," "The Mystical Experience," "Summer
Dreams," "My Dying City," and misc. notes on Dostoevsky including some
extracts from D.'s letters to his brother.
The notes on Burroughs discusses his "ruminating" describing his
ascetism, piusness, and appearence of a mystic saint (this is in
connection with an event concerning Joan Vollmer Adams's "malice,"
whatever that was at the time.).
There is also another observation about Leo Kerouac whom grew defensive
when Jack commented how the President and other dignitaries go to the
Army/Navy game in Pullman cars while poor average peopel stand in the
cold and are often forced to buy scalped tickets. Leo, it seems,
remained anchored in the belief and trust of the justice system. It is,
Jack observes, one of th ekey differences between his generation and
that of his father (who later wrote into the same notebook that he
wasn't part of his generation. Jack then concurs).
Needless to say, there are innumerbale gems waiting to be published
some day which are, to me, a thousandfold more interesting than On the
Road. >> Stay informed about: ON THE ROAD (new addition) |

Let me amend something about Visions of Bill that I overlooked in my
typed notes, it is actually a little more substantial. Handwritten into
a notebook titled Personna Names Duluoz Legend, which is in itself 100
pages of a holograph manuscript, there is a 30-40 page essay about
William Burroughs entitled Visions of Bill. Hopefully it will see the
light of day someday for it is a wild but very intuitive sketch of his
writer friend. >> Stay informed about: ON THE ROAD (new addition) |

I just signed a contract with a university press to write a book about
all of these pieces from the 1940s: THE NEW VISION: Kerouac in the
1940s, since I have the bulk of my research and transcriptions done,
look for it in about three years. >> Stay informed about: ON THE ROAD (new addition) |
