The question I put up for discussion is this:
"Should Ramsey Campbell use his column in ALL HALLOWS to talk
obsessively about Ramsey Campbell?"
In two recent examples of that column, he appears to have spent much of
his time attacking perceived critics, and then eagerly using that as a
platform for discussing and justifying his own work. Isn't this an
abuse of position as well as an abuse of the reader? Couldn't his time
be more altruistically spent discussing new writers or ideas (for
example) instead?
The only Ramsey Campbell issue I would like to see Ramsey Campbell
publicly discuss in his column is the conflict-of-interest issue linked
to the BFS award system (and indeed, the deeper concern that BFS
officials manipulate the Society for their own career purposes, as
first highlighted by the BFS's founder).

The Beware "Barker" Warning.
Small press publisher Chris Barker (http://www.hauntedriver.co.uk/) is
a classic internet troll and egocentric personality who routinely
grubs through newsgroups and discussion lists in a perverse quest to
draw attention to himself and his few meager accomplishments in the
publishing world. He is a muckraker who will attack anyone anywhere
for any imagined offense that occurs to his warped mind. It seems
that to get on his good side, one must not only agree with all his
bizarre opinions but also submit all of one's own opinions to him for
approval before making them public. Chris Barker is, in short, an
absurdity of tragicomic proportions.
Unfortunately, Mr. Barker's barbs are so numerous and outrageous that
many persons of good character have felt the need to wage an
interminable war of words with him, a war which has ravaged and
polluted more than one online forum. Also, these persons have risked
lowering themselves to his subterranean level, risked besmirching
their own reputations, and put themselves in danger of health
complications due to high blood pressure.
The present document exists to counter these issues. It serves as a
public health and sanity warning and is at the disposal of all
individuals who have fully evaluated Mr. Barker's heinous online
activities and wish to no longer respond to his attacks with personal
messages. This document is a standing response to Mr. Barker and may
be posted in any online forum in which Mr. Barker has launched one of
his typical assaults.
This document is not an antibiotic, however, but a quarantine notice:
Do not for any reason engage the Barker Virus, just avoid it. 'Nuff
said.

Ms Mleen:
Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I was referring to RC's regular column
which features in All Hallows, a printed journal, owned and published
by the Ashtree Press, which however purports to be the official organ
of the Ghost Story 'Society'.
May all your New Year's resolutions be suitably Evil,

Obviously, Ramsey Campbell has as much right to say what he wants as
anyone else on the net. No one has to read it if they don't want to. If
any writer, well-known or otherwise, wants to promote the merits of his
own work, that is his privilege. Unless he does it by some anti-social
method (e.g. spam), which Campbell doesn't.

I find Campbell's column boring myself. To use the available space in
All Hallows for discussing the editing - or the lack of it- of his
previous novels (who cares, anyway?) and for chiding David Langford for
his criticism is a demonstration of poor taste. >> Stay informed about: Ramsey Campbell, Obsessively |

Hear, hear. Some common sense at last.
The problem with nepotism is that your friends (or in this case,
cronies and work colleagues) won't tell you the truth for fear of
offending you. And if you happen to be one of the UK's most famous
horror writers, and President of a society that bestows awards,
then...well, you don't have to be a genius to work it out.
CB
PS. I suggest you guard your identity with some degree of caution: your
card will most definitely now be marked for having expressed the
opinion that you did. I'm serious. >> Stay informed about: Ramsey Campbell, Obsessively |

I read the article without thinking Mr. Campbell was chiding Mr. Longhorn
for his review. It seemed to me merely his way of launching an article about
constructive editorial criticism vs. editorial tampering.

I admit I started the article thinking Mr Campbell was reacting quite
poorly to the review, but by the end of the column I came to feel the
same way Jim does. The remarks were just an opening into a larger topic
(one I found interesting even if Andy did not).

The reactions I am aware of, both on- and offline, indicate quite
clearly that those who know RC are giving him the benefit of the doubt,
whereas those that don't, believe it was a self-centred piece. Be
honest, would you expect anything else? CB >> Stay informed about: Ramsey Campbell, Obsessively |

Why on earth would I want to guard my identity?
In reply to "Adam": please don't be daunted by the warning above. It
was honest of you to make such points in your very first posting ever,
and I hope everyone treats them with respect.

Still, I got the name "Andy" wrong, so let me try again:
