I just got an email from a producer for the ABC reality show "Wife
Swap". Apparently, they are "Seeking JRR Tolkien Enthusiasts!" Or, as
the producer put it in the email:

Potential families can live anywhere in the United States,
but we ask that families applying for the show consist of
two parents and have at least one child, age 7 or older,
living at home. Specifically, I'm looking for families
whose lives have been transformed by the world of Middle
Earth! If you yearn to walk the streets of Bag End, I want
to hear from you!

(Obviously Bag End got a major expansion at some point....) Now, I'm
not eligible (no kids yet), and I wouldn't take them up on the offer if
I were: volunteering for humiliation in front of a national audience
isn't my thing. But if you and your family want in, I'll happily pass
along your names. Smile

One question that comes to mind is what type of other family they're
targeting to "swap" with. I'm told that the show usually tries to pick
families with highly incompatible personalities or life philosophies, to
make sure that there's contrast and conflict. So what broad type would
they expect would be intrinsically hostile to Tolkien fans? (Or vice
versa.) I could imagine the "fundamentalist Christian who thinks all
fantasy is the work of the devil" angle, but I suppose they could also
be thinking about some sort of "Robert Jordan fan" angle. Any other
thoughts?

I just wanted to pass that along. Now, back to my regularly scheduled
workload. Smile

i too expect they will, unfortunately, go for the religious vs. fantasy
theme, but i think a family of literary critics would be just the thing.

"this fantasy stuff... what is it _for_? i just don't understand what
Tolkien is trying to _say_."

"so what do you think Frodo's loss of the finger actually symbolises?
the role of imperialist powers in emasculating the natives?"

Well, as everybody knows anything is useless unless done for a practical
purpose. Literature *must* convey a message heartfelt by the author, or it
is trash. Food *must* be eaten purely for the sake of nutrition, or it is
junk food. Clothes *must* be worn purely for warmth, and the pockets, or
they are purposeless vanity. And flowerpots, flowerpots have *no* use in
the window sill since they do not add to the usefulness of the house.
And whatever you do, *never* smile, laugh or otherwise express joy or
pleasure. Except smugly, at those obviously beneath you in tastes and
therefore of inferiour morality and breeding.

Reality shows, aren't they generally as real as a celebrity's tits?

Fifteen minutes of fame or of infamy? But I'd refuse as well - I need no
help in making a chimp of myself. Smile

Ah, but LotR *does* carry a message heartfelt by the author. It's just
not one that many literary critics are comfortable with (or one they
even recognize) Smile

Back to the original topic, I'm really curious what type of family
they are looking for that would be intrinsically hostile to a family
"into" Tolkien (unless they picture Tolkien "fans" as geeks who always
dress up in Orc costumes, or something like that). Or, the other way
round, what a "Tolkien family" would be hostile to.

Steuard, do you think you'll get an answer if you just ask them?

However, Tolkien was a devout Christian and the Fundies know it (check
out the fiction section of a Christian bookstore sometime: George
MacDonald, C.S. Lewis, and Tolkien rule the shelves).

Tolkien's appeal is so broad that it's hard to guess what the opposition
would be. But if they want to find people opposed to a Hobbit lifestyle,
all you need is someone who doesn't smoke and is on a diet: "No second
breakfast and no pipeweed in this house!!!"

But some of them hate Tolkien because he was a Catholic. Some of them even
hate C. S. Lewis because they regard him as some kind of crypto-Catholic.

As the thread resurrected itself, that reminded me: Any reaction so far?
