I'm thumbing through the Dec 5 New Yorker. Early on, page 10, I see a
column, UNHOLY RACKET, a pop review, and there's a drawing of a rocker lady,
and her band is called "Pretty Girls Make Graves."

Everybody here is nodding in instant recognition.

Yep - I nodded in recognition too when I saw the band's name listed. I
went to see them at King Tuts in Glasgow - a fantastic power-punk
night. What a time I had. Worth a visit if you are that way inclined.

But what is the current relevance to this newsgroup? That was the question.
Wasn't no power punk nights anytime during the fifties I know of.

Of course, that era is like an old fading granpa; everyone in the family is
fond of the old guy but nobody remembers anything of his younger days...

Nod.

Ah yes, the name of the band is evidently taken from a song title on the
first album by The Smiths in 1984.

Is that the band with the leader named Ray?

Also in Some of the Dharma as a poem called "Strange Cemetery in
Jamaica" which predates The Dharma Bums (I believe) as it was composed
during the late fall/early winter 1954 . . .

"That's because death,
Void, bleak,
And all those old gray
Worries I had
Are now my luminous
Love
& there's nothin
to say
PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES Fuck you all"

------------ Jack Kerouac, "Strange Cemetery in Jamaica"
