I've always loved the way AR's VC books are deeply religious. While they
are basically Christian to me it seems that it is actually Catholicism that
is the focus. Particularly as Lestat and Armand growing up in Europe which
principally Catholic particularly in those times. Anne herself was/is
Catholic, I was brought up a Caholic and I found 13 years of Catholic
education particularly useful in Memnoch the Devil. I've always wondered if
the books lose their impact on people who don't have a religious background
or are not religious. Or just find it had to appeciate sins like breaking
open a Tabernacle or the orders of angels. I myself am an
Athiest.....probably from all that education!

I had a religious up bringing until i was about 8 or 9 but i must admit
that i was dragged to church. I had already read most of the cronicals and
when I read Hemnoch the devil with having lost all interest in the church or
religion . It got me thinking if how she put it was right did the devil come
to earth to experience the flesh and did god also follow later. It seemed
to make sence so of I went to ask my mum who it still a big church goer .Its
funny how if you go to a religious person with another view on religion they
rubbish it strait away . Anyway im still a atheist but i think the way anne
described the start of the church it was all very convincing .

I was raised Lutheran and although I stick by my faith it is interesting to
read Rices ideas on religion. I don't say I agree or disagree with it all,
just that it is an interesting take.
I have a hard time accepting hard-line religious fanatics who close their
mind to any other option of how it all had taken place.
None of us will truly know until we leave this place, so it will be
interesting to find out who was right...Mike

Funny isn't it? Most people I know (my father's family are all Catholic, or
at least baptised/done their first confirmation), become lapsed Catholics
once they reach their majority. Many of them never return to the Church and
become your most vocal atheists... or become pagans *grin*

For me, because I have my father's family being Catholic and many friends, I
had no problems following the storyline, although I do get venial sins
*grin* mixed up.

Many people I know are Anglican/Protestant... and they have no problems
following the story, but my Jewish friends... many not only hate her style
of writing (heheh one friend complains constantly about the lack of
grammar), but also have serious difficulty following the Catholic rhetoric.

So I guess people of religions outside the Catholic base do have problems
understanding it all. Maybe that does make a difference between those who
LOVE her writing, those who tolerate it and those who outright hate it.

Tamara... just methinks btw<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

For another perspective ... I am Jewish and I never got too confused with
her books. Of course I like Anne's style. I found the religious material in
Memnoch very interesting, though (its been a long time since I read it) I
think I didn't always know which parts were considered part of
Christian/Catholic belief and which she was making up. I probably still
donąt. It did bother me a bit at the time that the VCs were getting so
Christian, but I felt better when she wrote Servant of the Bones. Smile

I wonder BTW what lack of grammar your friend was thinking of.... I never
noticed many problems in that area, but maybe my brain just ignored them.

I loved Servant of the Bones. The research she had to have done was pretty
intense. I asked Tam (my jewish/pagan friend) questions regarding the
Hasidan (spelling??) and Tam was surprised at the accuracy.

As for the grammar... no idea, just the writing style jarred with her I
think. It's like the first time I read "Closed for Winter" by Georgia Blain
(Australian author, just brilliant), the writing style jarred with me...
until I realised she was writing as we speak. In speech rythyms, rather than
"correct" grammar. Once I got into that pattern, I fell in love with her
novel.

And thanks for your perspective, I hadn't realised that her catholicism
could cause problems for other readers of different religions. (obviously
not for you though *smile*)
