So the three types of magic are in fact all the same, just implimenting
different focal points. Most human minds being unable to accept that it they
are in fact causing the effect, uses a focus. Except for "Higher path"
magicians maybe? Including magicians like Macros, Pug, Miranda and Magnus.
To my way of thinking, lesser path magicians need a focus outside of
themselves to perform magic. Higher path magicians find the focus within
themselves. Nakor doesn't seem to need a focus as such. Maybe just all
different ways of harnesing power that some people have? Nakor's being the
most "pure" as it doesn't seem to need a focus, whether internal or
external. His talent wasn't tainted by being a product of training. He
wasn't taught that there are constraints and limits, therefore he doesn't
have any. Virtually every other magician in Ray's universe are products of
training, even Pug. The only possible exception is Macros.

Pure speculation. Smile

And I didn't, either.

Funnily enough I discovered I also didn't remember the ending, and had mixed
up a couple of events (in my memory, the tower of testing and the trashing
of the arena at the Warlord's Festival got mixed up, and I seemed to
remember Pug and other magicians all standing on high platforms tossing
spells at each other...)

Still, 'twere as fabulous as I remember. I'll give it a week, and then on to
a reread of Silverthorn...
