I'm doing a research paper on the Beat generation, more specificallhy
the Ginsberg/Burroughs/Kerouac trio. I was wondering if anyone could
suggest some resources other than "On the Road", "Naked Lunch", and
"Howl" and "Kaddish". I'm looking for anything relevant to the overal
Beat revolution in general, or anything else anyone thinks would help
me with my paper.
Thanks,
Steve >> Stay informed about: Research paper on Beat Generation |

Get "Off the Road" by Carolyn Cassidy, Neal Cassidy's wife. One can't do
Kerouac nor Ginsburg without Neal Cassidy. I first read On the Road in high
school in the late 60's. When I read Off the Road about 10 years ago when it
came out, it propelled me into reread most of Kerouac. I ended up liking "Off"
better than "On" and came to the realization that Kerouac didn't age that well
with me and that "On" was no longer my fav kerouac. Go figure.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Research paper on Beat Generation |

How about tracing back to the earlier influences? Whitman, Rexroth, Patchen
etc?

Oddly, the first time I learned of Kerouac was reading Ann Charter's
book, "Kerouac". I was fifteen, knew nothing about him, and the blurb
on the cover made me think he was one of those stereotypical Beat
poets. Who knew that the Beats also wrote novels?
I was looking for something to read, I was sort of interested in
the period, so I bought it (it was in paperback).
So I came to his books knowing fully well that most of the characters
had real life equivalents, and even had the chart to decode them. There
were enough excerpts in the book to get a feel for the real books. But
I also know there are "Kerouac memories" that are invoked at certain
times, but they are of the biography, not the "real books".
I found I liked The Dharma Bums better then On the Road, but I
haven't read either in a long time, so I couldn't say why I thought
that.

Have you read Frank Kermode's A Sense of An Ending?

Cassidy's a driving force on several levels, and several generations.
In many ways he *is* the Beat Generation--- the catylist for Kerouac
and Ginsberg.
I first read On the Road in

I guess "Visions Of Cody" will always be my favorite. It has the thin
wild mercury sound.

Exactly my introduction to Kerouac. At exactly the same age. I carried
the Charters book around like a holy grail for weeks.

I haven't read the Charters book in maybe 20 years, but probably like
you mean, it sticks with me.

No, but in this context, I'll look for it.
