Just found this group and seeing how the author in question is an active
particpant i wanted to express my heartfelt thanks for the game "Return to
Krondor". Even though this is an old game, it is one that remains on my PC
to this day. I have yet to come across another RPG that I have enjoyed as
much. I would love to see a more modern version of this (maybe a sequel)
with the same type game play and excellent story line. Again, thank you, you
have brought many hours of enjoyment to my little corner of the world Smile

Thanks, todd.

The problems with a sequel to RTK are very complex, and have a lot to
do with merger madness. Sierra Online is now about to be acquired by
it's 3rd corporate owner if GE does buy Vivendi as it looks.

However, Iron Realm has optioned Midkemia for a MMORPG, so you might
want to check out their web site.

If you thought Return to Krondor was good, you should try Betrayal at
Krondor. Simply, my all time favorite RPG.

Yes I still play it from time to time. It's a pity that the source code
hasn't been released so that it could be ported to Linux as well as the
latest Windows.

I managed to get it working under W98, but it is getting more difficult
to provide a compatible environment for it.

I also enjoyed RtK but found it constraining after the relative freedom
of BaK.

Regard,

My partner, Steve Abrams, has (had?) the source code. He was looking
at the possibility of porting it to the Mac back in the day. There
were so many undocumented direct hardware calls that it was impossible.
Remember, it was a DOS application because the Powers That Be at
Dynamix decided there weren't enough Windows machines at the time to
make the product viable. Of course, it was the last DOS only program
they released . . . so there you go.

Good gameing time back then, what a fall from grace Sierra has had since
those days.
I still count BaK as my fav game, and still one of the best ever.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Well you thought that was Dymanix high point, Tribes released years
upon years later using BaK render engine and gained some popularity.
Despite Torque's power it never saved Dymanix. They have since been
disbanded and I don't know the extent of the owner of Dymanix's
copyrights, but I guess whoever buys the Former Publisher Serria they
may require those rights. Again I don't know, maybe the author's
required the copyrights.
Last I knew Serria and Blizzard where being passed around as a Bad
luck charms. And Serria is trying to make another Tribes game
abandoning the Torque engine for Unreal's. There could be millions of
reason as to why they went with Unreal. Cost, knowledge/experence,
legal issues, but whatever the reason. The game industry is looking at
a very interesting change on how games are made.

Betrayal is one of the greatest roleplaying games ever. as pointed out
it is a sod to get working on modern Windows OS'es. However it does work
great on Linux using the DOS emulator Dosemu.

Now if someone could port DOsemu to Windows then everyone could play it
again.

I used to play it under dosemu, but at the time, sound support was
almost non-existent. Does it work for you Dave?

cheers,

I still play Betrayal at Krondor on my Windows XP machine. It runs well
with VDMsound

Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away.

I never got sound to work unfortunatly (but I was was using an on board
sound card, that calimed to be soundblaster compatible but wasn't).

There is some more light at the end of the tunnel.

There is a free version of dos www.freedos.org which I'm going to try to
get Bak working on.

Will let you know how it goes.

Did you try it with VDMsound? Works for me.
