At the end of "Ringworld's Children" can we tell what direction the
Ringworld was headed from the description of the path of the hyperspace
monster that drifted across the field of view and through the top of
one of the rim walls?

Also, will a large portion of the Ringworld's population make excellent
Hyperspace pilots one generation after "Ringworld's Children?"

They will be construction workers having been pressed into forced labor to
hurriedly construct a new shadowsquare system before the new sun bakes the
surface. (seems like a critical goof to not have the protectors develop a
way of having the shadow squares join the ringworld in hyperspace.)

New sun? It will take a while to find a suitable star, clear the
debris, and manoeuver the ring into a stable "orbit" around it.
Freezing is more of a concern in my opinion. And if Tunesmith did have
a way of coming out of hyperspace right around a star, he would
probably have a shadow square system ready for deployment. Maybe he
found a smaller, dimmer star with little debris around it to park the
ring around temporarily. He could set up a sun-sized gravity lens to
bend light away from the ring to make a day/night cycle. Just think
about what Brennan did on Kobold, and what he could have done with the
entire sun as a power source. Remember, Tunesmith is much, much smarter
than you, me, or Larry.

no need for any shadow squares. Hyperdrive it a couple billion kilometers
distant from the star for 12 hours, then back.

Since the hyperdrive embedded nanomachinery was "charged" by the
shadowsquares before the Ringworld took flight, once at its new star how
would the be recharged without the shadowsquares?

Besides, I'm thinking you want as maintinence free as possible-

Build some new Shadow Squares.

I submit that "no shadow squares" is maintenance free.

Tunesmith could have hyperdriven the Ring to less than it's range, stored some "gas"
and then taken his time "refuelling" the hyperdrive, by whatever means.

(I'm an old time diehard SF fan - I realize we can can take this discussion anywhere
