Being an innocent bystander in this ... could it be that you were
using a system without a 3-d graphics processing unit onboard? so the game
program substituted a (pixellated) texture map where on higher-capability
hardware it would have tried to get a "grass" model rendered. I'm not
totally innocent in the concepts of the last 5 years of graphics, I'm just
not terribly interested. If I want FPS-shoot-'em-up, then what's wrong
with "Elite" (provided you can slow the processor down to the requisite
4.77 MHz)?
One of my friends went as far as loaning me his Voodoo graphics
card for a couple of months to try to persuade me to get one ... to be
stymied because when I walked into the shop his fellow salesman refused to
give me the 5% "Charlie special" discount. I declined the deal, returned
his Voodoo, and didn't bother to get a better graphics card for another 2
years (when I couldn't get anything more basic than a Voodoo-2).
Anyway, games ... minimal interest. Has someone come up with a game
that's more absorbing than Civilisation? That I can take to work and run
from a floppy?

No, I have a top of the line system, and play almost every FPS game that
comes out on the PC market.

I doubt there are much of any games of the scope of Civilization that
you could fit on a floppy. There are lots of "small" games, often sold
by shareware, which are usually puzzle games but often are a lot of fun
and are well-produced. (Even those won't fit on a floppy.)

I was going to say the same thing. If you're running it on a low spec
machine then that's about what you'll get. If you're running it on a
higher spec machine you should see amazing graphics, certainly not "TV
resolution" (mines got a Radion 9800 Pro on a 3.2GHz Athlon and runs
Halo with all graphics options turned on).

Elite? The space shoot-em-up? That Elite?

No, sorry.

I made the TV resolution comment since Halo was designed for Xbox, which
being a console, runs at TV resolution (which by PC gamer standards are
very, very low). The models and textures were not improved for the PC
version.

That's the only Elite I'm aware of .
