An American Sketchbook
Off the Road
by Elisha Cooper
America is really big. Elisha Cooper got in his car an drove around and
sketched it. He set out from New York City and headed west (sort of) up
through New England, down the coast, then off to California and back with
stops along the way in places like Friendship, Maine; Intercourse,
Pennsylvania; Miami Beach, Florida; Moss Point, Mississippi; Electra Texas;
Pilar, New Mexico; Hollywood Hills, California; Big Sur, California;
Missoula, Montana; Alice, North Dakota; and Chicago, Illinois. The result is
an adventurous cross-country road trip that shows us the rodeos, beaches,
ball games, and greasy spoons that are the heart of America. With his
sketchbook, Cooper captures the country.
