This may seem off topic at first, but its not.

A few years ago, while visiting the National Gallery of Art in Washington, to
see an exhibit of Victorian paintings, I saw one of a woman in an orange dress
asleep in a large chair that I immediately recognized as having the exact same
postore of the robot in the Ralph McQuarrie painting that became the cover
illustration for robot dreams. I kept the broshure from the exhibit, but can't
seem to find it today.

I have also seen the print of the painting for sale at my local Borders. One
time I compared the store's print to its copy of Robot Dreams just to cast
aside any doubts I may have had.

Does anyone know of the name of the original painting, and the artist?
Rmember. it was in a "Victorian" exhibit, so it was made over 100 years ago.

Is it this exhibition?

On Mike's implied question, "Did the Good Doctor take his
inspiration for that cover from the painting "Flaming June?" Not
at all likely, given the way SF cover art has worked from the
beginning of the genre. Cover art is farmed out by the publisher
to an artist - hopefully one of the ones [e.g., Kelly Freas]
specializing in SF art, and even more hopefully to one that will
actually read the book/collection and perhaps take his/her
inspiration from something actually in it - without the author
having any say in the matter. Usually, the first time an author
sees the cover of the new book is when he/she receives the
author's copies of it.

Nice painting though. Don't recall, and am too lazy to search it
out, the cover art on Robot Dreams.

iirc Roger Zelazny introduced a short story saying they came to him w/
the artwork and asking for a story written to the picture (which in no
way is meant to contradict what you have said -usually- happens).

iirc^2 Asimov once introduced a RZ story by commenting that he (Asimov)
had all kind of advantages in life by having a name that occured early in
the alphabet and how hard it must have been for Zelazny.

Hmmm. Does _Buy Jupitor &OS_ include the artwork?

It's exactly the same pose & composition

The same thing happened at least twice to Asimov. "Founding Father" and
"The Proper Study" (both found in _Buy Jupiter and Other Stories_) were
written to match already existing artwork -- in the former case, IIRC, it
was the magazine cover.

No, just descriptions in the introductions to the stories of what the
artwork was. Since the original publication details are given, anyone
who *really* cared could probably dig up copies of the magazines.

Thanks, Joe. Ralph McQuarrie did an excellent rendition [perhaps
an homage] from the springboard of Frederic Leighton's work.
