I'm reading in an italian magazine about cinema that I, ROBOT is in post-production.
It's a movie with Will Smith about a cop who is investigating on a murder committed by a
robot. Directed by Alex Proyas (never heard before).
The brief does not tell more.
Do you have more info about that?

Yeah. Check this out: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0343818" target="_blank">www.imdb.com/title/tt0343818</a>
BTW, the Italian magazine you're talking about is, by any chance,
"Ciak"? Which issue?

He's the director of "Dark City". He's more a music video director
then a movie director, I guess.

It's going to be released in Italy on October 8 (July 16 in the US)

You can even buy the poster, if y'like.

Which means it has little to do with the original Asimov book. It may still
be a good movie, but it probably won't be particularly very Asimovian.

(The plot seems superficially like the Caves of Steel--which I always
thought would be the Asimov work best suited for the screen.)

He is best known for directing "The Crow" & "Dark City".

Being the author of three Robot novels--Mirage, Chimera, & Aurora--I
found myself oddly privy to how this movie came about. I don't know
how good it's going to be, but I can tell you this curious bit.

Originally, it was a screenplay about a murder involving robots.
That's it. No Asimovian connection at all. Apparently someone on the
production staff brought it to everyone's attention that there was
this book called "I, Robot". In the course of making sure they
weren't stepping on copyright, they read the book and decided to write
the Three Laws and Dr. Susan Calvin into the screenplay. I forget her
name, but the actress cast to play Calvin is nothing like I would have
imagined for the character.

One of the rare instances where Hollywood paid attention to anything
outside its own head.

The reason I found this out was because ibooks decided to rerelease my
novels in mass market to take advantage of the movie.

That's why I said "superficially" above. A robot being accused of murder is
about the only common theme. Also Will Smith wouldn't fit my image of
Baley.

If it turns out to be entertaining movie (even thousg not Asimovian), I'll
still be OK with it.

Hollywood, the land where the accountants are far more creative than the
screeenwriters Wink

I wish you good luck on that endeavor. Now is anyone re-releasing Asimov's
original novels to coincide with the movie?

If I recall correctly, his character is not Bayley. How unfortunate.

Agreed. It would be nice if somebody would make Harlan Ellison's
version.

I wish I knew. I believe DelRey has the rights at the moment. I
doubt they'd pass up the chance to make a buck.

Febbraio 2004. Una pagina destra, una colonna con un fondino colorato e diverse recensioni
incolonnate. L'ho letto in biblioteca.
Anyway, there is not much more than what I posted here.

How can a Three Law robot commit murder (as opposed to killing by accident)?

How did they get permission from the Asimov Estate to use the 3 Laws and Susan
Calvin?

This movie was released over a year ago. It has even been playing on
FX or USA for the past couple of months. Is there someone here having
a brain cramp? Or did someone forget to empty the bit bucket and let
Usenet start recycling old posts?

Say hello to Tim Bruening. He'll have an answer for you in about
fourteen months. He'll add mn.humor to the groups list, too.
