Although I now recall having once heard a vague reference to the
matter before, it has only been in the last week that I have been made
properly aware of the implications arising from Rosemary Pardoe's
terrible train accident which she apparently suffered some years ago.
I once spent a whole day with Richard Dalby, and although he talked
about RP, he never mentionned this particular matter.
It as though a light has been switched on. I now understand why some
of her friends have demonstrated such extreme vociferousness in the
face of any perceived slight against her or G&S e.g. Ramsey Campbell,
the Rodens, Salmonson. For that reason these self-appointed
'champions' should know that if they have read any dark reference to
this tragedy into any of my anti-G&S sentiments, then such speculation
existe purely in their own imagination. I would never joke about such
a serious issue. However, I am quite sure that almost anything I might
have said or written at any time in the last five years could be
twisted into a slight by one so minded.
I am faintly disturbed by the behaviour of some of her friends, who I
now suspect may have been 'wrapping her in cotton wool', thus making
it harder for Jamesian scholars to get at the truth. They have also
affected a heroically defensive and wholly misplaced stance in the
face of possibly perceived but non-existent personal slights.
Out of respect for RP, I will continue to criticise what I believe to
be her flawed Jamesian perspective.
