Given that DW seems to be recreating the RN at the time of the
Naploeonic Wars, will The Charisian Navy introduce the RN rating
system for ships -or something like ti. The RN used this system boith
to classify ships and to determine the pay grades of certain senior
officers (such as Post Captains and Admirals). Under this system, ship
were rated by the number of BROADSIDE guns carried
!st Rates: 90 to 100 Guns, There were never more than around adozwen
of these ships in comssion at one time, they were the supercarriers of
thier day, huge ponderous, and heavily gunned, they were normally used
as fleet lfagships

2nd Rates, under 90 guns but baove 75 guns, thes and Thrid Rates were
known as "Liners"--ships fit to stand in the Line Of Battle.

3rd Rate. A post Captain's command these were the "woodenn Walls of
Old England" known otherwise as "three Deckers" (from the number of
gun decks)

4th Rate. Mounting anything from 50 to 64 guns, these ships, by the
time of the Napoleonic wars were considrered obsolete and were being
phased out. Such ships us remained were often used as squadron
flagships "on distant service" , where the chance of an encounter with
an enmey ship of the line was not likley but something larget than a
frigate was needed .

5th Rate: Frigates, the most numerous class in teh RN amd the most
desired command. A competant ( and preferably) well connected Friigate
Captain could be sent "cruizing" in time of war, to take as many
prizes as possible. After all the "admiral Commanding Upon The Station"
got HIS eighth percent with no effort

6th Rate. Sloops of war, of not more than 18 guns (20 would make her a
small Frigate) and commanded by a "Lieutenant of 8 Years Seniorority"
More properly entitled a "Lieutenant and Commnder" the rank of
Lieutenant Commnder not being peromulgated until 1880. This was a
tricky post. Having been to all intents a junior captain, if poeace
came, an officer was lible to find himself on half pay. he could not
return to the wardroom, or serve in a lesser capacity-except as Flag
Lieutenant. Once "Made Post" his chances of permanent employmnet
incresed.

Charis will also need to use the RN method od orgainsing the ships
into Dqaudrons for pay purpose and seniority. IN the RN in ascending
rder these were the REd, Blue, and White Squadrons. One's first flag
as an Admiral was as Rear Admrial of the Red, the Vice Admiral,
Admiral, rear Admiral of the Blue, Vice admiral, Admiral, Rear Admiral
of the White, Vice Admiral Admiral, Admiral of the Fleet. Nelson was
an Admiral of the white/ Todya we use the same flags but in different
was
The REd Ensing (red Duster) is flown by ships of the British Merchant
Marine. The Blue Ensign bu Government owned ships (such as ships Of
the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service, Naval ships, but merchant crewed)
as well as merchant ships in which a set proportion of the crew and
the Captain are members of the Royal Naval Reserve.
The White Ensing is flown by HM ships in Commission in memory of
Nelson.

Charish may find iteslf organising the Navy into the Blue Silver, and
White divisions.
