| I was just thinking about something. If Anne Rice never wrote a book again
about anything, would you be sad or happy? A lot of people complain about her
writing. That's why I was wondering.
I'd personally be indifferent. I just finished QOTD. So, I still have more to
go. What do you guys think?

I have nothing but respect for Anne. There was a brief period of time when I
was angry at her for saying cock fighting was a fascinating "sport." Not only
is it NOT a sport, not only are the people who participate in it toothless and
will have bad karma, but...well, I don't want to go off on a tangent. You get
the idea.
Anne has been through so much in her short life, so far.
If she never wrote another book I'd consider myself fortunate to have discovered
her work, and continue to satiate on the books forever.
I do hope this time, if she continues to write, she takes a departure to the
demands of the vampire fans. The maniacal people who tatoo themselves with
veins and who look like goons on the lines at book signings.
I hope she finds peace and joy in her life with her son, Christopher. I don't
know if I'd figure out how to breathe if I lost my child at six, and my husband
at fiftysomething.

I agree with a lot of things you said in your post, but wonder what is cock
fighting? I've never heard of that. It sounds really weird. Am I the only one
who's never heard of that?

I agree, too. Everyone should be happy. She's had a lot of trauma.

Hi there,
I've never seen a cockfight, so I'm not sure if its to the death....but I'm
sure its still gruesome either way. A cockfight is a fight between two
roosters. I believe they're trained to peck/claw each other to death.

I'm sure gambling is involved, but I think human nature has a lot to do with
it. Why do people like watching boxing, football, or hockey? All violent
sports and all loved just the same. Humans have enjoyed bloodsport for
hundreds of years (Look up the gladiators of ancient Rome).
Of course pitting two animals against each other is unforgivable to my mind, as
the animals don't have a choice in the matter. Horrible...

Isn't it funny how things happen sometimes? We went from a post about books to
chickens to sports? Weird huh? I was thinking about that.

That's a pretty accurate description, what you left out is that they
are each equip with a spur-like device that helps them kill each
other. It is strapped to one of their legs.
They don't have to be trained to fight, they do it instinctively when
the two males confront each other. Personally, I don't see this as a
"sport" and anyone who is interested in seeing it has to have
something wrong with them these are beautiful creatures who people go
to see die. As there is gambling involved it's the worst kind of
animal abuse. When illegal cockfights are raided they find these
animal sdead or half-dead just thrown in the trash.
Take care,
Ashe

It's something done in the bowels of buildings, barns and stables where men or
women raise roosters and bind them to a very small rope where they are protected
(sometimes) by a small hut. Sometimes you see as many as a hundred of these
roosters on a persons property. They take their cocks (roosters) and make bets
on who will win. The looser is usually dead by being pecked to death.

Now you know why I was so angry at Anne when she said it was a wonderful, or
fascinating or interesting bunch of people, in a disappearing culture. I
suppose you can see if you can find some posts still on www.google.com and look
in Usenet archives for this newsgroup. >> Stay informed about: Sad or Happy? |

I personally it's time for her to end it. It should have ended a long
time ago. There is nothing to write about, it's been that way since
QOTD, after that everything else has been crap, Well Body thief was
okay but still. I hate this Mayfair/Vamore BS just end it and be
done. But something tells me it's not the end, remember Lestat left
her after Memnoch? Although we haven't heard of him coming back it
sure didn't stop her from writing more and more and more books.

As I said, I don't positively recall the exact way she put it. If you do some
deep searching on her website, she may still have it there. OR, you can go to
some of her unofficial fan websites to see if anyone has her ideas on it there. >> Stay informed about: Sad or Happy? |

I think she should try the 'Richard Bachman' method. Stephen King at
one time wasn't sure if he was a bestseller because he was pumping out
good books or become his franchise name would sell anything. So he
used the pen name 'Richard Bachman' which got a small fan following.
His sales as Bachman were woeful until someone tracked down the
copyrights and figured out King wrote it. King still claims that
Bachman's Running Man would never have been a movie if the King name
wasn't attached.
I'd like to see Anne Rice use a pen name and try a different genre. I
think part of the problem is her books will sell - good or bad - as
long as they fall under the franchise name. I think a pen name would
help her figure out what she is doing that works or doesn't work both
personally and market wise. I think it's been a long time since an
Anne Rice book was held to standard market wise versus only
critically. C'mon get real - do you think Publisher's Weekly or some
large published book review is going to pan Rice even if she deserves
it? Crichton, Grisham, King, Morrell, Hunter, Higgins Clark, Koontz
all get the same review immunity from the big boys.
I think Interview is a really good book. It was edgy and took chances
in terms of characterization and inventiveness. I really don't think
you'll see a return to the promise of Interview until Rice loses the
franchise name. >> Stay informed about: Sad or Happy? |
