Hello, thanks in advance for any replies!
I have a copy of J.D. Salinger's Franny and Zooey. It's a greyish-blue
(I'm colorblind, so work with me here) hardcover, with the dust jacket.
Publisher is Little Brown. Copyright appears to be 1955, then it shows
the dates 1957 and 1961. It clearly states "First Edition," though
mentions a simultaneous release in Canada.
TBut this is before the time of the ISBN, and no other publishing info
is on the page, so how do I know what printing I'm dealing with? I
apologize for not being more knowledgable about book collecting, it's
just a book I love and happen to have. >> Stay informed about: Salinger, First Edition, what printing? |

Yes, I looked at the ABE webpage, but even that page doesn't
distinguish the visual differences between first edition first printing
and first editiong seventh printing, though it does make that
distinction.
I assume that there must be, inside the book or on the jacket, some
visual cue which I am missing. >> Stay informed about: Salinger, First Edition, what printing? |

Since it states First Edition, it's a first printing; later printings
are so specified, in place of the FE statement.

Wow. $1.00 to $20,000. Now there's a price range.

The link leads to a straight title search--856 hits, which include
paperbacks, later printings, BCEs, non-US editions, etc.
Tighter parameters gets you down to 71 hits--which still includes many
later printings. The price range for unsigned first printings (59 cc)
is $45-550, with most (34 cc) in the $100-300 bracket. Nearly all the
copies under $100 have at least one serious defect.

For the terminally curious, like me, who might wonder why the book has three
dates, I found this: First edition published 1961 by Little, Brown and
Company of Boston and Toronto. These stories first appeared in the New
Yorker. "Franny" was published in January of 1955 and "Zooey" in May of
1957.
And, in fact, the site goes on to give a complete bibliographic description
with detailed first issue information as to binding, type, etc.:
http://www3.isrl.uiuc.edu/~unsworth/courses/bestsellers/search.cgi?tit...Franny+
This site appears to have been developed as college coursework material over
several years, but even though compiled by students, I think it's really a
treasure of information on modern firsts. Here is the link at a higher
level:

From this site: "First edition published in green cloth."
If this is accurate, then it must be an as-yet undocumented variant of
the binding. My copy, like the OP's--and every copy on ABE that
specifies the binding color--is in dark-grey (charcoal? slate?) cloth.
Overall, although there is obviously some useful information in many of
the listings at the UIUC site, I found most of them to be, for a
collector's purposes, incomplete and inadequate. I wouldn't look to
these descriptions for reliable first-printing identification.
I did enjoy, though, seeing the cover of the UP for _To Kill a
Mockingbird_: http://tinyurl.com/c6vwm

Good catch, Jon. This site was done by students, not collectors. The
listing later says "There have been 10 printings of the first
edition.". The researcher was giving the description from a later
"first edition" printing.
