These are not standard, though, as we can see here -- what you are
calling a "dagger" I see as an upper-case Y with an accent, and what
you call a "double dagger" I see as a lower-case Y with an accent. I
imagine that other Windows users see the same thing.
(If I had the Japanese support enabled for this group, I would see
Japanese characters instead of those).

The paragraph and section signs came in fine.

All special characters display fine and dandy using Xnews...

I'm quite impressed, actually: all the marks look correct when quoted
back to me. But I note that other readers are also seeing the dagger
glyphs as accented Ys. Those characters aren't available from a
standard (US) Macintosh keyboard; Microsoft and Apple clearly made
quite a few different choices in assigning the non-ASCII keys. (Other
characters lacking from the 'classic' Mac OS keyboard layout include
the fractions, the exponents, and the Old English letters eth & thorn.)

In chess-notation a dagger signifies a check, a double dagger a mate.

Right: I should have remembered that. I don't think I've read more
than half a dozen chess scores since the traditional style of
designating positions (e.g. "P-K4 Kt-QB3") fell out of fashion in
favour of the 'Salvo' style (e.g. "Pe4 Nd6").
