Subject: Sartre, Genet, & Bukowski connection?
Date: 1996/01/25
I have sometimes come across articles about the author Charles Bukowski stating
that either Sartre or Genet at one time regarded Bukowski to be the most
important living American poet. Problem is I never have been
able to pinpoint the origin or authenticity of these statements.
Could anyone in any way help me find this out ? Is this perhaps a modern
myth ?
The Sartre/Bukowski statement appears on many of the paperback editions
of B's books.
Actually Bukowski's first printed story appeared in the same mag in which
an article/story by Sartre appeared. This was in the 40's, Bukowskis "lost
decade" during which he nearly drank himself to death. No-one knew who he
was or heard of him again for years.I find the Sartre/Bukowski connection
to be an interestering parallell to the Baudelaire/Edgar Poe connection of
the previous century. If the connection is true though...
I just read Camus's "Myth of Sisyfos" again and it seems to me Bukowski is
right there next to Sisyfos, pushing that boulder. B. fullfills Camus
statement; "The art of LIFE is more important than the art of WRITING."
(my own interpretation from the Norwegian I read it in...)
Hope someone can help me out on the Sartre/Genet/Bukowski connection.
Thanx !
