Just read today on the official Philip K Dick web site about how the
Scanner Darkly movie is going (yeah, I know, old news). Exciting that
Richard Linklater is directing, not so execiting the Keanu Reaves is
starring... in most movies I've seen him in he seems to be doing an
impression of a piece of wood. Gus Van Sant managed to pull a
passable performance out of him for "My Own Private Idaho" so I guess
it's possible Linklater can get him to do a reasonable job.
Which got me thinking... who would be best suited to playing the role
of one of Phil's typical protagonists, say for example, Joe Chip from
Ubik? Steve Buscemi sprang immediately to mind.

Dammit....you got me thinking about this, but the problem is I'm
trying to think of somebody who can play a *nobody*, which
in general is not what actors do!
Steve Buscemi is an intriguing choice, but he has that creepy air
about him... Maybe if I hadn't seen ConAir I'd be OK with him.
Nicholas Cage is good as a helpless sap, but my problem with
him is I just don't like him.

I haven't; but then I thought of Fargo, where he plays a quite
disturbing role. I was thinking more along the lines of his role in
"Ghost World" or "Big Fish".
Ok, how about:
Paul Giamatti
Philip Seymour Hoffman
William H Macy

He's one of those actors I think needs a good director to motivate
him; otherwise he just drifts.

He always has that quality, though. Don't get me wrong, I love
the guy's work. One of the funniest things I've seen on TV in
years is the bit in the Sopranos where he said to Tony, "Put me
in, Coach." So trivial, but so perfectly executed.

Very good choice, but too old for most of the characters?

I guess. The only thing I really liked him in was that
horrible Leaving Las Vegas, in which he really made me
believe that he was a guy whose job was to drink himself
to death.

I gave my wife (not a PKD reader) a quick briefing and
the first name she came up with was Paul Giamatti (not
from your list, just out of thin air.
I also thought of Don Cheadle.
My ideal would be Jack Lemmon in his thirties.

It's animated, but over the actor's performances, like in Linklater's Waking
Life, but this one is meant to be more realistic. There's some stills
online, and they look very lifelike.

You think so? The three I've seen looked totally comic book.
I was watching Keanu Reeves in an incomprehensibly boring flick
called "The Replacements" last night and thought, "You know,
he *does* have the look and manner to be Bob Arctor," but
what difference does that make if it's "animated over"?

I guess lifelike more in relation to Waking Life than in relation to
reality. I think the look they're going for is comic book, and I think that
will allow the acting to shine through. In Waking Life, you still get a
sense of the individual's mannerisms, despite the animation.

OK....I hope so. I haven't seen Waking Life, but I can't say I have a
good feeling about this.

I'd highly reccomend Waking Life. There's a whole speech about PKD towards
the end of the film, and it's a great film on its own.

As we all know by now, they are making scanner darkly into a cartoon.
I can't believe it.
I have been waiting for this film for like twenty five years, and they
make it into a fucking cartoon.
It has LOW BUDGET written all over it. They don't need to deal with
sets, makeup, lighting, etc. because they run the whole thing through
a computer to cartoon it up.
It is a shame that Dick's true masterpiece is being turned into
something suitable only for Saturday morning television. Sigh.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: A Scanner Darkly Movie |

They'd have to remove 90% of the story for that!
Maybe they could make Substance-D stand for donut
