Well...a full year of seminary is done and my GPA for the 3
trimesters cumulative is 3.90.
Not sure if I mentioned it before, but my most recent class was
titled "Theology, Film, and Culture".
Primary course thesis: Christians live their lives as an
extension of the story presented in the Bible, continuing
primarily from the New Testament but influenced by the overal
meta-narrative starting in the Old Testament. US Society and
Culture, while influenced in part by Christianity, primarily
lives outside of that main Christian narrative and even defines
its own story. Since the 1920's and the beginning of the
American film industry, US Culture has presented its story and
even has had its story shaped by the films produced by the
Hollywood filmmaking industry. A study of films with a critical
eye is a good way of understanding the story in which many
Americans find their identity as well as understanding the way
that such films continue to shape the American identity with the
main goal as being able to understand, relate to, and minister to
the needs of the society around us.
Final project for the course (each student could declare their
own final project, subject to approval by the professor): A
critical analysis of the "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy and its
faithfulness to the Christian themes which Tolkien interwove
within his epic narrative, 8-10 pages, minimum 8 sources.
Final grade on the paper: 4.0
So, in honor of this, I've founda new vintage of Tolkien Ale.
It's the Peter Jackson vintage. Not quite as hearty as the
original, a subtle difference in the blend of flavours, but a
decent homage to the original brewmaster.

Just for that paper... Each week, though, I had to watch 3
additional films (that is in addition to watching all of the
extended edition of the trilogy over the space of 6 weeks) and,
for each film, offer a 1-2 page film interpretation. In addition
to that, we had a critical analysis paper to do on the book "Life
the Movie" by Neal Gabler so we had the reading to do for that.
In edition to that, the last day of class, we had a course
summary paper (3-4 pages) summarizing our analysis of the
cultural trends as portrayed by the movies we'd viewed from the
various time periods. AND, for one week, we had to prepare a
10-15 minute "tutorial" presentation on a film on the theme of
reality perception (choices were Matrix, Memento, Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Stranger than Fiction, Vanilla
Sky, among others).
So... 8 to 10 pages... Well researched, BTW, with minimum 8
sources... I think, all told I put out 35 pages worth of critical
analysis over those 6 weeks.

One thing I'll note from my analysis while doing this paper, the
books elicit a sense of pity and regret that Gollum did not
convert to good (check out the scene from the book "The Two
Towers" where we see almost a physical transformation of
Gollum/Smeagol when he encounters Sam and Frodo asleep on the
stairs).
For the movies, that sense of pity and regret is there mixed with
a sense of anger as we see Smeagol being mistreated by Faramir
and his men. In the books, Gollum's sense of betrayal was
understood... and given time, you almost think that Frodo and Sam
could have over come it. Faramir's men, with their beating and
kicking of Gollum in the movie, pretty much slammed the door at
any continuing possibility of redemption for Gollum. Not only
was Gollum betrayed, but he was betrayed into the hands of men
who, for the most part, didn't treat him a whole lot better than
the tormentors in Barad-dur.

When I was in the navy I met a man who refused to see any movie that did
not directly promote Christian values; I sometimes wonder what he would
think of the LOT trilogy, or the Narnia series. I know he would not go
to Star Wars movies, that was one of the then current movie we invited
him to see, but would not.
I assume that for your class they provided the movies to watch, but did
they provide the popcorn???

I would think that, considering the original authors, your friend
would not go see LotR but would see Narnia. LotR, as per
Tolkien's own explanation in the foreword to "Fellowship of the
Ring" is NOT allegory and should not be read as such. Tolkien
DOES say that his own life experiences and such DO play a part in
the underlying themes and such in his work, but he did not set
out to write anything that would be seen as allegorical. His
essay "On Fairy-Stories" explains that the Christian themes that
are present in his "sub-creation" or because it IS a
sub-creation... a creation within the Primary creation. And, if
the sub-creator is true to his responsibility of creating within
the primary, truths from the primary will be present in the
secondary. So, there won't be DIRECT promotion of Christian
values in the movies based upon Tolkien's work while there are
still the INDIRECT presence of those same ideals due to Tolkien's
secondary creation.
Meanwhile, C.S. Lewis DID deliberately write allegory and so
there are direct references to Christian themes and ideas. So,
while the secular film industry may not have deliberately been
trying to bring those themes out, the film-makers, being
sub-creators in their own right, could not help but bring those
same themes over into their secondary creation.
>I assume that for your class they provided the movies to watch, but did
>they provide the popcorn???
Actually... we were only provided with 1 actual film by the
class (a film called "Sullivan's Travels"). The rest we had to
obtain copies of our own for viewing during the trimester. We
had lists to work off of for movies from particular eras and
themes. So, I opened up a NetFlix account and got my money's
worth... 3 movies a week for 6 weeks at $17.00 a month... I made
out like a bandit.
Final film for the class? Field trip to a local theatre to see
Harrison Ford crack his whip again as Indiana Jones..
