In the winter I can stash a bit in my anorak pocket. Even sugar free
candy has carbs so I need to limit intake.

If the multiplex was showing it on more than one screen but now it only
draws to fill, it comes to town. Remember, "Iron Man" had some stiff
competition, and it gets worse this Friday - the new 'Hulk' movie for one.
I forgot to mention, the in-town theater has books of tickets for sale,
buy 5 tickets for $12 - buy four get one free (bfgo?) - making for a
great gift for kids who may not be able to get to the bigger place.

Oh, sure, don't we all? Small candy packets (which the local
movie theater also does not seem to stock -- it is jumbo or
nothing) are easier to hide.

'Hulk' isn't out yet? From all the ads, I assumed it was...

I miss living near a smaller, local theater.

And, for much of the past decade, most of your reading has
probably been 'Goodnight, Moon' (etc), for the 56,345,346th time.
I have friends with small kids -- they've got their kids'
favorite books memorized, and haven't opened their own books in ages.
I have time to read... unfortunately, the number of things I need
to get read seem to grow, and the time to read hasn't. Where I
used to try reading three things at once (fiction, non-fiction,
and magazine), now I'm up to about ten things at once (10
fiction, 10 non-fiction, 10 magazines). Kinda slows the reading
down...
Speaking of which, where did I put that new IEEE Spectrum
magazine? I saw it yesterday...

I have two signs on my front door.
No Religious Callers. Thank You.
And
Don't Preach At Me, And I Won't Preach At You.
( The latter has a cartoon Lucifer character below it. )
I have only had one visit ( LDS ) since I put them up, and the moment I
offered to invite the couple ( and their teenage daughter ) to "my
coven", they RAN. I think the message got round, as the mic on my
security camera always picks up funny remarks when they call at my
neighbours appartment.

I tried to put up a sign, but the darn thing fell off.
Self-adhesive, my foot.
I haven't had the religious folks reeeeecently. Maybe they got
the message -- they caught me at an awkward moment, last time,
and I may have been a little snappish.
(Seriously? Invitation to a coven doesn't sound that bad. Cult
would be bad. But coven?)

>Don't get me started on what Jackson & Co. did to Faramir. They redeemed

If I understand the back-story of the books, what Jackson did was
a bit of a time compress. The battle of Osgiliath in the movie
where Frodo, Sam and Gollum were present is something that had
happened in the books before Boromir went to Imladris/Rivendell.
It's an important plot point to explain why Osgiliath was
important later and why Denethor felt so strongly about that
city.
I think, from that same backstory, it can be implied that at one
point in time, Faramir DID hold some of the same ideas as his
brother, that the Ring could be used by Gondor to gain an
advantage over the enemy. But the maturity that comes from the
loss of Osgiliath and months in Ithilien carrying on guerilla
warfare changed Faramir in the books... for the "entertainment"
factor in the films, we needed to "see" that change of mind to
understand why he just let Frodo, Sam, and Gollum go their way.
Tristaan (who enjoyed Faramir in the books but has no illusions
that an "entertaining" version of the story will necessarily hold
to the "letter" of the books)

Actually, I think you'll find that the begats were left in as
essentially elements of the narrative. First, it provides
continuity from one story to another. I mean, there were
hundreds of years where nothing really important happened. If
you just jumped from one story to another, you'd quickly lose
connection. By including the begats, you get that connectivity.
Secondly, there is some theology in those begats. I'll have to
double check my notes from my OT class but there are significant
inclusions and notations within some of those geneologies that
give indication as to some of the events and such that happen
later. Like, why was it so important to destroy all the
Ammonites or Canaanites when Israel got to Canaan? It's in the
begats...
Finally, it's a literary style that we Westerners of the 20th and
21st century don't understand. This is a way of telling stories
and narrations that was common 3,000 years ago and actually has
meaning in that context. To try and read it with a purely
Western mindset is going to end up exactly where you did:
getting rapidly bored.
Does this mean that I always read all the begats? heck, no...
they bore me, too. But if I'm reading the Bible looking for the
theological points and need to cross reference some names or the
why's behind certain things, those begats DO come into play.
>Now *there* is a good reason to get the details down!
Hehe... now, I HAVE had intelligent conversation with JW's since
then. Folks who actually WANT to engage in dialogue. But it's a
rare situation.

Sounds like a friend of mine who used to have fun with door-to-door
religion salespeople (that's the way he referred to them).
One was to answer his door dressed in long white robe with ...
suspicious ... stains (made from BBQ sauce but looking dried-blood
like) and a large, double-bladed axe in his hands (blunt but they
weren't to know that) and invite them in for the 'ceremonies'. He
kept axe and robe by the door to drop on whenever he didn't recognise
the person through the peephole.
Another was to answer the door wearing nothing (apparently) but a
bathrobe and invite them to 'come in and join the orgy'.
Both techniques were very effective at seeing off the religion peddler
du jour and soon word got around not to knock on HIS door.
One time, Ross got woken up on a Saturday morning (sleep-in day, and
before we got married so I wasn't around to open the door) by some LDS
wanting to preach at him. He looked at them and said "Hey, you guys
are heretics. You know what we do with heretics? BURN them. Just
wait until I get the matches". I WISH I had seen the ensuing chaos as
two neatly-dressed would-be missionaries were chased down the road by
a wild-haired, bearded 6'8" man wearing pyjamas and brandishing a box
of matches! They had no idea that Ross wouldn't *really* do any such
thing even if he COULD catch them - early heart damage from a
congenital condition meant he couldn't run fast or far enough to have
caught them anyway.
Personally, I find not opening the security door (so they can't do the
'foot in the door' trick) followed by a firm "Thank you but we're not
interested" takes care of things nicely. Not fun, perhaps, but
effective.

My wife kept a geologist's pick next to the door. It looked similar to
this one:
http://z.about.com/d/geology/1/0/U/U/prospecthammer.jpg
with a sharpened pointy end.
We would get the foot-in-the-door technique, literally. After warning
the missionary (or pushy salesman once) she showed them the hammer and
pointy end, and taking one 'aiming swing' tapping the toe of the
offending shoe-in-the-door; she would yell "here goes"...and the foot
rapidly disappeared from the door.

Darn it, I knew I should have purchased an ax last time I was at
Renn Faire...

Not a trick I can try, since I'd be absolutely *terrified* they'd
take me up on it! I think you need to be 6 ft for that offer to
scare anyone. Maybe mildly scruffy.

Saturday is my sleep-in day, too. At least, I try for it to be.
And, somehow, all those "would you like to buy" telephone
callers just *know* it, because when do they ring?
Now, the grocery bills are probably heinous, and finding a car
you can fit in must be a pain, but, gosh, wouldn't it open up
opportunities if I could be tall and physically intimidating?
If I chased anyone, I'm not sure they'd bother to run. Matches
or no matches.

I used to be polite, but these days I just Be Irritated at them.
(In general, because they caught me elbow-deep in dishes, or I
ran like a hare through my weeds to reach the door when the
doorbell rang, and now my sandals are full of pokey weed seeds.
And I ran like a hare just to make life easier on door to door
irritants, which bugs me.)

A priest we know once promised to give a couple of Jehovah's Witnesses
something that couldn't ever be taken away from them. Even he couldn't take
it away once he had given it to them.
"I bless you in the name of the Father, {make sign of the cross}
and of the Son, {make sign of the cross}
and of the Holy Spirit. {make sign of the cross}"
by the time he finished, they'd fled down the driveway and along the street
so fast, they were completely out of sight! {REALLY BIG GRIN}
It doesn't have the same effect with all flavors of evangelists - Mormons
just bless you back - but that's how it went with the Jehovah's Witnesses.
