Weaned as I was on pulp 'scifi' books in the home library (which my
sister in law got rid of years later) <grrr> and reading Heinlein,
Asimov, a bit of Bradbury, and of course Niven over the formative
years I wonder if the latest generation is being , um 'poisoned' so to
speak with stuff like slasher movies & Harry Potter, and who are the
new young turks if any, taking over?

I mention the tainting of our youngsters partly because I'm on the
borderline of becoming an old fart and I need the practice, but also
in a tongue in cheek way I morn the lack of scientific introduction
that seems missing now vs my own experience.

Even as late as the Eighties and the advent of personal computers
there was an exploration of scientific interests.

I suppose I look back on this post and find myself having wandered
from the original premise but I tend to ramble while drinking Root Beer.

So, are there any promising scientific influences, writers or
otherwise, and if not how might we encourage so in the future?

Whilst not exactly new, I think Greg Bear takes the current hard sf title.
For the PKDick fans, Jeff Noon is hard to go past. And I rather like
Richard Morgan for a fun read - if somewhat violent.

Both good choices. My favorite current writer, though not exactly new, is
Alastair Reynolds. Lots and lots of hard SF goodness. *

You disagree?

Darwin's Radio (etc) and Vitals seemed to me to satisfy the
requirements... If ye didn't know a lot more celluar biology by the time
you were finished, either you didn't read too well, or you were already
fairly knowledgable.

Actually, Bear's always been fairly impressive. The eariest stuff
(Strength of Stones for example) maybe wasn't so hard, but was a good
tale. I'm can't think of a /bad/ story, offhand.
