For Sale:

Keltie, John S., ed. A HISTORY OF THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS, HIGHLAND CLANS
AND HIGHLAND REGIMENTS, with an account of The Gaelic Language, Literature,
and Music By the Rev. Thomas Maclauchlan, LL.D., F.S.A Scot. And An Essay on
Highland Scenery By the Late Professor John Wilson. Eight vols. Edinburgh
and London, A. Fullarton & Co., 1875. Illustrated with a series of
Portraits, Views, Maps, etc. engraved on steel (20), Clan Tartans (30), and
Upwards of Two Hundred Woodcuts, including Armorial Bearings. As explained
in a 4 pp. Prospectus for subscribers, this work was variously published in
25 parts, and in eight divisions, and as a two-volume set. All eight
volumes of this edition are in modern red library cloth, stamped in gilt on
the spines. Vols. I-IV: iv (Prospectus), 776, (xiii)-xxxvi (Remarks on the
Scenery) pp. Vols V-VIII: 818, xii pp. Title pages, Contents, and List of
Illustrations are bound at the end of Vol. VIII, following Index. The set
is ex-library with stamps, ink numbers, pockets, etc. The engraved plates
are bound at the front of each volume, not scattered throughout as seems to
have been the case with the two-volume edition, according to the page
numbers in the List of Illustrations. The 30 clan tartans are in colour and
are pasted on separate leaves, and tissue-protected.

Condition (but for being ex-library) is near fine with no real evidence of
use. A few (4) of the plates have mild water-staining, and some (3) have
very light foxing. One map showing the districts of the highland clans is
not present, and appears never to have been bound in. Over-all, very good.
$200.00 U.S.
