Archived from groups: alt>books (more info?)

The story takes place on a space ship, but the boy does not know this
at first.
----------------------------------------------------------------
The book starts with the boy waking up to the sounds of babies
crying. He investigates and finds a completely automated nursery.
Machines are taking care of all the needs of the babies. The voice of
the ship tells the boy that he may hold one of the babies if he wants
to. After the boy spends the day looking at, and caring for, some of
the babies the ship directs him to go back to his chambers and go to
sleep.
When the boy wakes up "the next morning" he hears the voices of
small children playing. Again, he investigates. There are toddlers
playing in the same nursery from the "previous day", but no babies.
After spending the day with the toddlers the boy is once again
directed by the ship to go to his chambers and sleep.
Every time the boy wakes the children are older, until they are
eventually older than him and they remember him.
The children, now adults, come to believe that the ship is somehow
putting the boy's life in danger. They attempt to "rescue" the boy and
some get killed in the process.
The ship wakes the boy at different phases of the (now) adults
lives. He gets to see them court, marry, divorce, re-marry, get fat,
grow old and die.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Ultimately the ship reveals to the boy that he is a genetically
superior leader of a new Earth colony and that purpose of watching the
babies grow up was to demonstrate the problems with inferior genetic
stock.
