Heyas!
I'm currently searching a name appearing in one of Feist's books
concerning Midkemia. The problem is I can't remember which book it
was. I only remember parts of the scene...
Someone was talking to a dragon and it started telling a story about
Ashen-Shugar, his dragon and a person Ashen-Shugar called "his
friend".
What I need is the name of this "friend" of Ashen-Shugar!
Thanks in advance

First of all thanks for the quick response.
The problem is, its not Pug. This story where this "friend" is
mentionend, is rather short and only parenthetical told. But I'm sure
it refers to the real Ashen-Shugar, not Tomas after getting the armor.
Why I'm looking for it? Yeah I'm heavily in P&P roleplaying and my
gamemaster gave me a quest where I need to find out the name of a
friend of a very powerful ancient being. This gamemaster is a real
Midkemia-Maniac and popped out the clue, that the name is related with
the name of this so-called "friend" of Ashen-Shugar. So I remembered
your Midkemia books.
Other clues were "Corso, Sheikh and Son of Kor", which I can't relate
to Midkemia at all, but perhaps it helps those who want to help me
Thanks in advance

The problem is first that I wrote Magician 28 years ago and well, I've
done a few things in between. If it's the story I think it is, it's
about Rhuargh, the ancient Dragon who meets Tomas and Dolgan, and he's
talking about Macros coming to the cave and them battling, and Macros
then befriending the dragon. So it would be the dragon's friend, not
Tomas. Otherwise I don't have a clue.

Hmm... That seems to be the story... So it can be either Rhuargh or
Macros. Thanks a lot, perhaps this helps me finishing this quest.

I would question whether your game-master is as knowledgeable as you claim,
especially considering that from all we have heard of the Valheru their
mind-set did not grasp the concept of friendship, the closest being
semi-trusted servant (and even that level of trust was instilled by fear).
As a being of completely amoral feelings and beliefs it would seem that
Tomas was the closest thing to "friend" Ashen-Shugar ever had, and even that
was a somewhat narcissistic conceit, as Tomas was still a part of
Ashen-Shugar, albeit imposed from the outside.
Mr. Feist may wish to correct me on some of my interpretations, but I don't
think I am far off the mark. >> Stay informed about: Searching for facts! |

It's pretty apt. The more I think of it, if the question wasn't founded
on a poor grasp of the work, the GM was asking who the dragon called
friend, and that would have been Macros. If I remember the line, he
told Tomas Macros was "the first of your kind I ever counted a friend,"
or words to that effect.
Ashen-Shugar had none.

Oh, unless he wants to know who Tomas's friend is, which would be Dolgan
the dwarf.
If it's another scene with another dragon, you've got me. I wish I
could claim an encyclopedic memory of my work, but I'm just finishing up
my 25th novel this week, 24 of which concern Midkemia, so there's a lot
to keep track of.

Hmm maybe my GM isn't the all-knowing god of fantasy literature as I
thought of him
Considering all of your answers it must be probably Macros.
But as I look at the mind-set of the Valheru as Bajori has stated it,
I have the strong feeling, that a "friend" of such an entity would
better fit. Especially when I think of the entity whose friend I'm
meant to find. In fact it is an entity called Nightslayer, who was
created by a demoniac entity named Verjigorm as his amoral pawn and
later turned against its evil master, creating the so-called Namegiver
races and protecting them; Nightslayer was then known as the first
dragon. I know its a completely different universe, but as I pointed
out in my first post, my GM based Nightslayers story, that is normally
not further explained in the RPG books, on Ashen-Shugar and the
Valheru. Imho this "first dragon" somehow fits into a Valheru mind-
set.
Hmm I really need to validate whether it is Macros or not
Greetings,
Aniriand
P.S.: By the way, thanks for this interesting discussion And please
excuse my poor English, as I'm only a German >> Stay informed about: Searching for facts! |

What type of beer? Generally the quality of the beer quaffed while reading
is tied intricately to the quality of the work that you have in your
