Post subject: Seeking bids or cost-effective options for perfect binding, 8.5 x 11, 100 copies
Archived from groups: alt>publish>books (more info?)

I can provide the interior of the book, but I'm looking for someone who can
perfect bind the book using either a cover I provide, or can print a cover
for me at sufficient size. The book will be 8.5 x 11 and 250 sheets of 50#,
100 copies.

Can anyone here offer a bid for the job, or mention an affordable service
who will do this for me?

Thanks!

There are lots who could bid the job, but shipping would be the
killer. Books are heavy.

When I first started out I printed the guts myself and had the covers
printed by a real printer. Then I located a small one-man bindery shop
in a local suburb. He charged me $45 setup and $.50 per book, which
was cheaper than bigger bindery services. I would bring him the books
and a quantity of covers and the next day he would call back to tell
me they were ready for me to pick up. Eventually I got my own binding
equipment and now I do it myself.

In practically every city there are book binders. Sometimes they are
hard to find. Very few print shops have their own perfect binders, so
almost all of them ship their binding work out to a bindery. To find
the local binderies, just call some print shops and ask them who they
recommend.

I can do it, I have a machine. I will offer $7 per book using your covers.
I can print covers for you, using Carolina .012 covers, for $2 per cover,
using a large format inkjet followed by spray enamel coating (required
to lock the ink in and give a glossy finish). This does not cover the
shipping costs back and forth. I prefer .pdf for the cover art. I can also
print the interiors for you if you find that it makes more sense than
paying the two-way shipping costs.

Scott, can you print covers for $2 each that are large enough to bind an 8.5
x 11 book with 250 sheets inside?

Yes. The covers are 11"x19", which leaves 2" for the spine, which is the
maximum capacity I will bind in any case (it will do 3", but I don't like
the quality of the result). The spine can be anywhere up to 2", I cut the
covers to fit.

I use Carolina cover from International Paper specifically because it is
a C1S (or coated one side only) cover paper that is semigloss, holds inkjet
ink well with high resolution, and becomes high gloss after I enamel it
after printing.

If you sent me an address (privately of course), I can ship you a sample
bound book.
