BRUCE WAGNER - reading and booksigning for "Still Holding"
Tuesday, September 21, 7 pm

Salman Rushdie describes Bruce Wagner as "A moralist whose misfortune
it is to have as his subject the self-crazed, affect-free,
excess-addicted world capital of amorality, Hollywood. His hard luck
is our good fortune. In blazing, high speed prose he tears into his
subject with taboo-breaking savage rage disguised as wild comedy."
Regarding his recent novel, James Ellroy says: " "Still Holding" is
Bruce Wagner's masterpiece." Don't miss this event!

"Still Holding" is the third installment of a trilogy that includes
"I'll Let You Go" and "I'm Losing You." Bruce Wagner is also the
author of the acclaimed novel "Force Majeure," as well as the
television miniseries, Wild Palms. His film, Women in Film, adapted
from I'm Losing You, was shown at the Telluride, Toronto, Venice, and
Sundance Film Festivals.

ROBERT OLEN BUTLER - reading and booksigning for "Had a Good Time"
Wednesday, September 22, 7 pm

For many years Robert Olen Butler has collected picture postcards from
the early 20th century - not so much for the images on the front, but
for the sentiments written on the back. Using these brief messages
from real people of long ago, Butler has written "Had a Good Time" - a
short story collection at times lyrical, amusing, melancholic, and
moving which speaks to the human condition.

Robert Olen Butler - one of the finest writers of our time - is the
author of ten novels and two collections of stories. He won the
Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1993 (for "A Good Scent from a Strange
Mountain"), as well as a National Magazine Award, for fiction, in
2001. He is an avid collector of vintage postcards, fountain pens,
non-sport trading cards and other cultural detritus of the 20th
century.

Last year saw the publication of "The Amulet of Samarkand," an
enthralling new fantasy by Jonathan Stroud about an apprentice
magician named Nathaniel and his summoning of Bartimaeus, a five
thousand-year old djinni. In "The Golem's Eye," the second adventure
in the trilogy, we find Nathaniel working his way up the ranks of
government when crisis strikes: a seemingly invulnerable clay golem is
attacking London!

Jonathan Stroud has authored several children's books. He lives in
London. "Harry Potter has a new challenger . . . if you haven't heard
of him yet, you will." - New York Post.

Norrell"
Monday, September 27, 7 pm

Ten years in the making and 800 pages in length, "Jonathan Strange &
Mr Norrell" is being called "Harry Potter for adults." Is Susanna
Clarke's novel about the friendship of two gentleman sorcerers in
London in the 19th century really that good? YES. "Jonathan Strange &
Mr Norrell is unquestionably the finest English novel of the fantastic
written in the last seventy years." - Neil Gaiman.

Susanna Clarke lives in Cambridge, England. Jonathan Strange & Mr.
Norrell is her first book. "Absolutely compelling . . . the author
captures the period and its literary conventions with complete

CINTRA WILSON - reading and booksigning for "Colors Insulting to
Nature"
Tuesday, September 28, 7 pm

Cintra Wilson is originally from San Francisco, where she spent
several years performing and writing for the stage. Those writings
begat journalistic writings, which in turn begat books and occasional
forays into TV and screenwriting. Now comes "Colors Insulting to
Nature," a raucous, hilarious debut novel which looks at the ugly side
of fame and celebrity culture from a writer described as the "Dorothy
Parker of the cyber-age."

Cintra Wilson is a pop culture pundit whose column for Salon.com and
collection of essays, "A Massive Swelling: Celebrity Re-Examined as a
Grotesque, Crippling Disease," have garnered her a cult following. An
award-winning playwright and screenwriter, she has collaborated with
Francis Ford Coppola and has her seen her work produced by Tim
Robbins' Actor's Gang theater company. "Cintra Wilson is a force of
nature. She is my favorite writer and I love her." - Jack Black.

NEAL STEPHENSON - reading and booksigning for "The System of the
World" ***
Thursday, September 30, 7 pm

"The System of the World" is the thrilling conclusion to Neal
Stephenson's The Baroque Cycle - the New York Times best selling epic
of intrigue, adventure, and excitement begun with "Quicksilver" and
continued in "The Confusion." Filled with a remarkable cast of
characters in a time of genius, discovery, and change, The System of
the World and the trilogy it concludes is a magnificent achievement.

Neal Stephenson is one of the most highly regarded and best-selling
science fiction writers working today. He is the author of "The
Diamond Age," "Zodiac," "Cryptonomicon" and other books. His 1992
novel "Snow Crash" helped earn the word "cyberpunk" a place in
history.

*** This Booksmith sponsored event will take place at the Park Branch
Library (1833 Page St.) in San Francisco. Please note: Neal Stephenson
will only be signing copies of his new book, along with copies of
other titles in the Baroque Trilogy.
