Someone just e-mailed me to let me know how much he enjoyed reading the book
he bought of me on ebay. I immediately informed him that books bought from
me are for collectors only, and should not be opened under any
circumstances.
This whole episode gave me a nasty turn. I'm just off to iron my dust
jackets.
Best regards

The books brought from you can be used for any purpose: propping up
short table legs, starting fires, ... Your view, that collectable books
are the same as collectable rocks, is not, fortunately, universally held
- although it may be the predominate view within the confines of this
newsgroup.
And yes, someone who buys one of your books and reads it, believing in a
positive relationship between reading books and human intelligence, will
suffer economic loss in that its potential resale value to book
collectors with the equivalent of "tulip mania" will be reduced.
Books exist to be enjoyed - as books. A "collectable" book locked away
in a vault
is a book lost. Think of two copies of the same book: one locked away,
one destroyed in a fire - they are the same, neither book has any impact
on a human mind. Make that "any positive impact" - the locked up book
does feed someone's greed.

That book saved in the vault can some day come out. The one burned is
lost forever. The Collector preserves the past for the future.

Well, Diane, I rolled on the floor laughing--having read both the
thread about collecting/reading books, and the thread complaining
about that thread.

READ THEM! *gasp* don't they know that they are to be used strictly
as decoration to make one look "smart" in front of friends?

One might have hoped that the readers of this newgroup were not so
irony-impaired!

Methinks some members of this group have had a humour transplant - It really
was quite obvious irony.

I have this feeling that Diane is British. Let me take the liberty of
altering Diane's posting so that it can be read and understood by others who
may not share her advantage:

Now this raises an interesting quesiton. Does anyone remember the book "A
1001 (or was it 101) Uses for a Dead Cat"? Perhaps we could write our own
book; "A 1001 Uses for a Dead Book?" Use No. 1: Snot cyphon. Perhaps a large
stack of them in the back of your pickup to help with traction during
winter?
